Tributes to the late Detective Colm Horkan

For me, the tribute paid by a man who I hold in very high regard, retired Garda Sargeant John Hynes, says it all about Colm: “His attention to detail was meticulous and the rights and needs of victims were paramount to him”. That attribute helped secure convictions and prevent further abuses of women and children across the West of Ireland. We have no idea of the countless lives that would have been destroyed but for the perseverance and dedication of Detective Garda Colm Horkan

– Deputy Denis Naughten, speaking in the Dáil on Wednesday

This is a truly terrible incident and has caused major shock amongst the entire community in Castlerea and the wider region. My thoughts are with Sergeant Horkan’s family and colleagues at this very difficult time. I hope that whoever is responsible is speedily brought to justice

– Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane

It is a sharp reminder right to the heart of the nation of the harsh danger that garda officers who serve this nation put themselves in every single hour of every day. It is a brutal and sad tragedy. Our guardians of the peace live and work among us. The loss to An Garda Siochána is immeasurable. All our thoughts and prayers are with Garda Detective Horkan’s family and those he worked with

– Deputy Frank Feighan

Detective Garda Colm Horkan served with distinction and pride during his 24 years with An Garda Síochána. It is a very sad occasion for the family and Garda colleagues of Detective Garda Horkan and unfortunately it reminds us of the major sacrifices that members of the Garda make to keep society safe

– Senator Eugene Murphy

His death is a tragedy. Colm Horkan was a proud Mayo man and a passionate GAA supporter. Colm’s death highlights the dangers that members of An Garda Siochána face on our behalf on a daily basis. I offer my deepest condolences to his family and to those Gardaí who worked with Colm and especially those in Castlerea Garda Station and the Detective Unit he served in

– Minister Michael Ring

Garda Horkan had a long and distinguished career in the Castlerea district both in Castlerea and Ballaghaderreen and will be sorely missed by the community he served. He was a valued member of the Charlestown Sarsfields GAA club with whom he played. The Gardaí, like the GAA, are very much at the heart of the community. This has been very visible over the Covid emergency period that we’re experiencing. This latest incident has had a numbing effect on us all

– Roscommon GAA Chairperson, Seamus Sweeney

My husband Ray is a retired Sergeant who knew Colm personally so I’m well aware of the huge upset and sadness Colm’s death has caused to the An Garda Síochána family and to the whole community. My sincere sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of the late Detective Garda Colm Horkan

– Cllr Kathleen Shanagher

We at the RDFL would like to offer our condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of the late Detective Colm Horkan who was killed in the line of duty within our league area last week. Colm, a renowned sportsman, many times represented the then Roscommon/Galway East and later Roscommon/Longford Garda Divisions soccer team with pride and great ability.

– Roscommon & District Football League

Roscommon IFA extend deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Detective Garda Colm Horkan. We would also like to offer our condolences to all the members of An Garda Síochána. During the course of his career, Detective Horkan built strong ties with the farming community while helping farm families. The rural communities acknowledge the work of the Gardaí in protecting its people and are grateful for their continued fight against ever-present rural crime

– Jim O’Connor, Roscommon County Chairperson

The close-knit community of Castlerea, the county of Roscommon and indeed the entire country are deeply shocked at the loss of this hard-working member of An Garda Síochána. We extend our sincere sympathies to his grief-stricken colleagues at this difficult time

– Cllr Tom Crosby
