Will be entered in international film festivals
A short film written by Strokestown-based Rose Byrne – and shot in locations in counties Roscommon and Mayo last month – stars Sonya Macari Devlin, who has appeared in a number of popular series’, including ‘Glee’, ‘The Tudors’ and ‘The Clinic’.
Shooting of ‘Skylark’ took place over a number of days in July, at locations in Kilmore, Strokestown, Ballaghaderreen and Swinford. The short film was written by screenwriter/playwright/producer Rose Byrne, and produced by Rose in conjunction with Christine Braithwaite, director/writer/producer of Box of Tricks Productions. Christine also directed Skylark.
The majority of the crew are based in various locations throughout County Roscommon. Some further crew members are based in Sligo, Meath and Offaly.
Skylark is a small film with a big heart. It carries a message of hope. We drop into the lives of husband and wife Thomas and Clare who are both dealing with the tragic accident that has befallen their only child, Leona. Thomas is guilt-ridden and weary. Unable to face what has happened, he buries himself in memories. When Leona repeatedly appears to Thomas he wonders about his own sanity.
Clare, shut out by Thomas, carries on as best she can. She finds comfort in her faith. While Thomas is remembering happier times with his daughter, Leona, he has a flash of inspiration and finds a way which leads them both through their turmoil.
Damien Lumsden, from Dublin, plays the role of Thomas. Damien has acted in several shorts including, ‘Juncture’, ‘Safe Inside’ and the feature film, ‘Don’t Sell me a Dog’.
Sonya Macari Devlin, from Ireland, but now living in Los Angeles, plays the role of Clare. Sonya is a very experienced actress and has played several roles throughout her acting career in short films, features and television series’, including ‘Glee’, ‘The Tudors’ and ‘The Clinic’.
Malie Mo Copnall plays Leona. Malie is a member of a Stage School in Westport where she has performed in several plays including ‘Peter Pan’ and ‘Hairspray’. Malie has also been in various shorts with Box of Tricks Productions.
This is Rose Byrne’s second short film with Box of Tricks Productions. Rose wrote ‘Expiry Date’ and co-produced the film with Christine Braithwaite in January 2020. The film was shot in Strokestown and is currently in film festivals. To date it has picked up three awards.
When completed, Skylark will be entered into national and international film festivals. Cruthú Arts Festival, Longford plan on hosting Skylark’s premiere screening in 2022. It is also hoped to have a screening in Strokestown in 2022.
Rose Byrne has been writing for over sixteen years. She has had several stage plays and two radio plays produced. She also had short stories and articles published in various anthologies and newspapers. Originally from Dublin, she now lives in Strokestown.
Christine Braithwaite has over twenty years’ experience in the television industry, working as Camera Operator on several shows in the UK. Christine now lives in Ballaghaderreen. She has directed and produced several shorts to date including her own script, ‘Circuit Love’.

Rose and Christine would like to thank Roscommon Arts Office and Creative Ireland, Longford for their support for Skylark. However, as the film was shot in various locations over five days with crew and cast coming from various parts of Ireland, the producers are looking for sponsors to come on board to aid in the costs of production and post-production.
