An annual report released earlier this week by the Mental Health Commission has ranked Roscommon University Hospital’s 22-bed mental health unit as the worst in Ireland.
The commission’s report on mental health services in 2017 rated all centres by compliance with regulations. The Department of Psychiatry in Roscommon University Hospital was the lowest ranked of 64 units nationwide.
The unit’s compliance rate also fell considerably within the space of 12 months. It had been 72 per cent in 2016 but had fallen to 52 per cent in 2017.
The commission was also critical of the outdoor area used by patients and the unit and described it as a small caged area shared by both non-smokers and smokers.
