Late goal wins thriller for Clann
Hodson Bay Hotel Roscommon SFC (Section A)
Clann na nGael 1-15 Strokestown 1-13
Strokestown dominated the first quarter and with Cathal Compton and Diarmuid McGann winning plenty of possession in the full-forward line they led by 1-4 to 0-1 after 14 minutes. The goal came after nine minutes when Ciaran Regan blasted home after a super pass from Paddy Brogan who had another fine game for the black and amber.
Clann improved before the half-time break and the arrival of county U-20 star Paddy Gavin plus the growing influence of Ultan Harney and Ciaran Lennon saw them claw their way back into the game. By half-time it was Strokestown 1-7 Clann 0-6.
Two minutes before the interval Sean Mullooly was black-carded for a pull on an opponent and in the ten minutes he was off the field Clann scored six points without reply (four from Ciaran Lennon). By the time Mullooly returned to the fray Clann led by 0-11 to 1-7.
The final quarter was a great phase of the game as fortunes swayed first one way and then the other. Ciaran Lennon was now the dominant force in the game as he scored a string of superb points. As it went into injury-time McGann levelled for ‘The Town’ before Cathal Duignan put them ahead.
Then in the 33rd minute the ball broke to Stephen Flynn in the middle of the field and he released Ultan Harney who goaled. The sides swopped points from Ruaidhri Molloy and Ciaran Lennon but Clann had done enough to squeeze through.
