Roscommon Council CEO Eugene Cummins says he can’t re-open Castlerea Fire Station until two vacancies for firefighters are filled.
Responding to queries from Cllr. Paschal Fitzmaurice, aired at Monday’s monthly meeting of Roscommon County Council, Mr. Cummins confirmed that there are two vacancies (recently advertised) for firefighters in Castlerea.
“If there are two vacancies that leaves us with seven firefighters in Castlerea retained by Roscommon County Council at the moment” Cllr. Fitzmaurice commented, before asking why the station hasn’t been re-opened.
Mr. Cummins said he is not currently in a position to re-open it, adding “Heretofore there were no vacancies and now two vacancies have to be filled.” He added that the station will remain closed until the vacancies are filled as he needs to be satisfied on safety issues.
