The 40x20 Nationals were held in Mayo recently and Lisacul’s two most prominent handballers, Sean Jennings and Denis Creaton, enjoyed impressive outings.
Jennings won the Masters ‘B’ event, winning four matches over the two days and then beating Limerick’s Pat Murphy 21-12, 4-0 (w/d injured) in the final. Sean wore Murphy down before the Limerick man’s body gave up on him in the second game. Jennings has probably been Roscommon’s most improved player in the last two years and is reaping the rewards now thanks to great dedication.
Sean’s regular training partner Denis Creaton also had a good run in the Mens ‘B’ event, winning three matches on his way to a final against Newport’s Ciaran Burke. Burke won a hard-fought encounter 15-8, 15-7 on his home court.
Creaton went one step further in the Salthill tournament a week later, when he won out the Men’s ‘B’ event, beating Limerick’s colourful Paul Hedderman 21-11, 21-11 in an entertaining encounter.
Further afield, Roscommon Town native and long-time St. Coman’s player, Hillary Rushe recently captured the prestigious Milwaukee Classic Ladies Open event with a very impressive final win over number one seed Aimee Tuohey 21-12, 21-6.
The heavy snowfall resulted in the cancellation of a number of golf outings across the county last weekend. However, two competitions went ahead in Roscommon where Jackie Maxwell captured the ladies’ 9-hole competition with 19 points ahead of Ciara Hereward-Ryan on 18.
Meanwhile, in the men’s seniors’ competition, Frank Kearns’ 27 points was enough to see off the rest of the field. Charlie McDonnell took Cat 1 with 25 points, Charlie Brennan Cat 2 with 27 points and Michael O’Connor Cat 3 with 23 points.
There will be a Christmas and New Year Ladies’ and Gents’ Open Special in Athlone from St. Stephen’s Day to New Year’s Day. It’s a 15-hole stableford competition and visitors pay €15.
The recent ladies’ 12-hole competition meanwhile, was won by Catherine Fitzgerald with 23 points while recent 97 Club winners were Eleanor Larkin, Ann Evans and Kay Delaney.
Molly’s are top!
Molly’s enter the Christmas break top of the tree in the Roscommon Darts League following their 6-3 win over The Hollywood in their rescheduled round five match.
Hot on their heels in second spot are The Holly Tree, who travelled to Ballaghaderreen last week and edged Molly’s 5-4.
Elsewhere there were wins for The Hollywood over An Bothar Rua (5-4), McDermott’s away to Creaton’s (6-3) and Flanagan’s away to The Forge (5-4).
Martin Fleming staked a claim for player of the week as he hit a 180 as well as 100 and 120 checkouts and a 15-dart leg in The Hollywood’s win over An Bothar Rua.
League action returns on January 12th when leaders Molly’s (36 points) will entertain third placed Flanagan’s (35 points) while The Forge entertain McDermott’s, Creaton’s host An Bothar Rua and The Hollywood Bar face The Holly Tree.
