The Roscommon Primary School Basketball County Finals were held in The Hub, Castlerea recently. Since January, school teams the from the length and breadth of Roscommon participated in ten blitz days. Table-toppers in each group faced off in semi-finals before 107 teams were whittled down to just ten

Ruth Kelly and Erica Feely, primary school teachers who set up this league last year, were thrilled with the progress this year and were delighted to give the county’s primary school children an opportunity to play basketball, some for the very first time.

The five finals took place at The Hub recently with Aughrim NS beating Drumboylan NS in the mixed two-teacher final to take basketball league honours for the first time.

In the 3rd/4th class boys’ final, Dangan NS also took their first honours, beating Croghan NS.

Meanwhile, the girls’ 3rd/4th class honours went to Scoil na nAingeal Naofa, Boyle following their win over Whitehall NS.

The 5th/6th class girls’ final was also won by Scoil na nAingeal Naofa, Boyle, who proved just too strong for Roxboro NS, winning a nail-biting finale by just one point.

The 5th/6th class boys’ final was a high-scoring encounter between Dangan NS and St. Paul’s, Castlerea. The Kilmore school eventually overcame a slightly understrength Castlerea outfit.
