County Roscommon is to receive over €800,000 in Sports Capital Grants, Minister Denis Naughten has confirmed. A total of 40 clubs and organisations throughout the county will benefit from the funding.
Among the grants announced are €80,000 for Shannon Gaels GAA to upgrade its existing playing facility, €48,500 for Ballaghaderreen GAA Club for an AstroTurf facility and €58,000 for Pádraig Pearses GAA Club. As well as GAA clubs other organisations to benefit will include boxing, athletics, golf and soccer clubs as well as Roscommon Sub Aqua and a number of other organisations.
“These grants recognise and assist the work of voluntary and community organisations and assist in developing high quality facilities in a variety of locations aimed at maximising inclusion and participation in sport and physical recreation,” stated Minister Naughten.
“The focus has been on prioritising the needs of disadvantaged areas in the provision of sports facilities while also encouraging the use of sports facilities by a number of clubs and organisations in local areas. We have many excellent sporting facilities in County Roscommon and these grants will assist in developing those further”.

Fine Gael Senator Maura Hopkins described the announcement as a “very welcome boost” to the region.

“I have met with representatives from many clubs and organisations within the county who work so hard on a voluntary basis to further improve their facilities. It is vital that we support our local clubs and teams in the great work they do and these sports capital grants are essential in supporting this work in our communities.

“I have been working closely with Minister Brendan Griffin and former Minister Patrick O’Donovan over the past year to emphasise the need for adequate funding to be made available to support clubs throughout our region,” she concluded.
