Cllr. Laurence Fallon has welcomed the clarification from Minister John Paul Phelan that he is to introduce a law which would copper-fasten the boundary of County Roscommon and ensure a structure is put in place for the development of the greater Athlone area, including Monksland.
The new structure will include council representatives from both Roscommon and Westmeath as well as the Cathaoirleach of both councils and will ensure cooperation on both sides of the county boundary on the development of Athlone as a city.
“Athlone is a designated growth centre and this is another step in ensuring that the people of south Roscommon can rest assured that their county will remain intact into the future,” stated Cllr. Fallon.
“I welcome the effort by a large number of people to get to this point, especially Deputy Denis Naughten, who has worked on the issue over the last number of years. I would also like to thank Minister Phelan, who I met on a number of occasions on this issue, for his ongoing commitment to the development of Athlone”.
