Local FG Senators welcome Capital Plan announcement

Fine Gael Senators Maura Hopkins and Frank Feighan welcomed the HSE Capital Plan, which was launched on Monday with news that local services look set to benefit.

Following Monday’s announcement, Portiuncula Hospital is set to undergo ward block and fire safety works and will benefit from a lift replacement programme under the €2 billion 2019-2021 HSE Capital Plan.

There are also plans to construct two new houses for those with intellectual disabilities in Ballinasloe and the new Specialist Rehabilitation Unit will be progressed at Roscommon University Hospital. The Sacred Heart Community Nursing Unit will also be upgraded with 50 additional beds.

Senator Maura Hopkins said: “I am delighted that the 50-bed replacement unit at Portiuncula Hospital has been included under the new HSE Capital Plan 2019 - 2021. This is a project, which I have been working on for a number of years along with former Senator Michael Mullins, Dr. John Barton and hospital management.

“These works will include the replacement 50-bed ward block, fire safety works and lift replacement programme.

“We know that the current ward block is simply not fit for purpose and this project is extremely important to improve conditions for patients and staff at the hospital,” she said.

Senator Hopkins also welcomed the construction of two new houses for patients with intellectual disabilities in Ballinasloe.

Senator Hopkins added: “It is also positive that the 50-bed upgrade unit at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Roscommon Town along with the 20-bed specialist rehabilitation unit at Roscommon Hospital will continue to progress under this new HSE Capital Plan. It is essential that both of these projects are delivered in order to cater for our older population and those who need access to timely and specialist rehabilitation”.

Fellow Fine Gael Senator Frank Feighan also welcomed the announcement that the €7.8 million Specialist Rehabilitation Unite planned for Roscommon University Hospital would be progressed under the plan.

“It is also important to say that once the Rehab Unit becomes fully operational, it will create 25 jobs initially and up to 50 jobs when all phases are complete. I am also pleased to see the inclusion in the 2019-2021 Capital Plan of the planned 50-bed unit at the Sacred Heart Hospital.

“It will enable treatment of patients from the West of Ireland in Roscommon University Hospital who would have previously been treated in the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) in Dun Laoghaire. It will also assist in reducing waiting times for patients who require access to the NRH,” Senator Feighan said.
