Ireland’s oldest person, Mary Coyne from Rathbarna near Castlerea, passed away on Monday at the age of 108. Her funeral took place in St. Patrick’s Church in Castlerea yesterday (Wednesday).
Mary, whose maiden name was Griffin, was a resident of the Áras Mháthair Phóil Community Nursing Unit in Castlerea.
Eight years ago she received the centenarian medal from President Michael D Higgins and when interviewed by a reporter put her longevity down to “taking life one day at a time”.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Roger some years ago and is survived by her son Tom, daughter Pauline, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family.
