Fine Gael Senator Maura Hopkins says she has raised the need for better pay and conditions for members of the Defence Forces with An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Minister with responsibility for Defence, Paul Kehoe.
Senator Hopkins said that she fully understands why some members of the Defence Forces are frustrated about their pay and conditions. She called for increased pay and improved conditions in order to improve retention within the force and also to attract new recruits.
Noting that the Independent Pay Commission is looking into the matter, Senator Hopkins said that following publication of that body’s report in the coming weeks, she wants to see swift action taken.
She pledged to “continue” to raise this issue with An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Minister Kehoe “until we see improved pay and conditions”.
