Fine Gael Senator Maura Hopkins has hinted that she may reconsider her decision to run as a Fine Gael candidate in the next General Election following the HSE’s announcement that will close the Rosalie Unit in Castlerea.

“As a healthcare professional and a public representative, I am standing with the people on this issue. I do not want it to come to a position where I have to consider whether or not I will be a candidate for Fine Gael at the next general election,” she said.

Senator Hopkins said she would stand with the people following a meeting yesterday (Wednesday) with Minister for Health, Simon Harris, Minister of State Jim Daly and Minister for Finance Paschal Donohue to discuss the HSE’s decision to close the Rosalie Unit in Castlerea.

“I am deeply frustrated by the manner in which the HSE have dealt with this issue from the very beginning. The approach by the HSE has let the residents and their families down. It is unkind and uncaring.

“I was the first public representative to bring this issue to the attention of Government out of concern for the care needs of the twelve people who call the Rosalie Unit their home. The letters issued on Wednesday are another clear example of the disregard that has been shown to the current residents and their families.

“The residents and their families still do not know what deficiencies exist in the care which they are currently receiving in the Rosalie Home or, how these could be addressed in an alternative care setting, as the HSE is suggesting,” she said.

Senator Hopkins that she had reiterated her stance at the “highest levels of Government” and that she would seek another meeting with the three ministers. See page 18
