All eyes on Seamus…

Featured Seamus Hayden. Seamus Hayden.

Will he or won’t he? Local political observers – not least intending candidates – are waiting with great interest to see whether or not well-known Roscommon GAA personality Seamus Hayden decides to tog out on the ‘political pitch’.

Hayden, who captained Roscommon to glory in the 1978 All-Ireland U-21 Final, and who later formed a feted midfield partnership with Dermot Earley at senior level, was recently approached by Fine Gael and asked if he would consider running for the party in this summer’s local elections (in the Roscommon Municipal Area).

True to form, Mr. Hayden – steeped in the GAA – was on his way back from the funeral of Roscommon football legend Liam Gilmartin when the Roscommon People rang him on Wednesday.

Seamus confirmed that he is actively considering Fine Gael’s recent overtures to him.

“I am thinking it through and will continue to give it consideration over the next few days. I have made no decision yet. I will be discussing it with family and friends” Seamus told us.

The Roscommon town based publican runs ‘Down The Hatch’ along with co-proprietor Larry Brennan.

Mr. Hayden is expected to announce his decision early next week.
