Fianna Fáil TD Eugene Murphy has accused the Government of not taking the home care packages shortage seriously.
Deputy Murphy said that according to recent figures, 146 people are currently waiting for home care help in Co. Roscommon, up from 132 at the end of March.
It is believed that over 400 older people are currently waiting for HSE home care support in Galway and Roscommon.
Deputy Murphy said: “We should be doing everything to keep people in their homes for as long as they can. It benefits the individual and is a fraction of the costs incurred in a nursing home or a prolonged stay in hospital.
“Fianna Fáil introduced the home care package in 2006. Since then it has been a success, providing people with independence and respect, while allows family members or carers a break to carry out other tasks in their lives.
“The current government have fundamentally mismanaged this programme and have now effectively frozen out any new applications until the later part of this year.
“It is time to look after ordinary people and let common sense prevail. The government should allow new entrants to the scheme and ensure those in need of home care packages receive them,” concluded Deputy Murphy.
