Doubt cast on venue for Roscommon v Mayo

As we go to press this week we hear that a decision will be made as to where the Connacht SFC semi-final between Roscommon and Mayo will be played at a meeting of the Connacht Council to be held last night (Wednesday) in Ballyhaunis.

The match was originally fixed for McHale Park in Castlebar but the refurbishment of McHale Park has not been fully completed and an inspection of the venue is expected to take place this week to see if the match can be staged there. It is expected that the game would attract in the region of 20,000 people.

If the game cannot be played in Castlebar then it is up to the Mayo county board to decide where the game is played as it is their home fixture.

They could opt for a neutral venue which would mean the game being played in Pearse Stadium in Galway – however it is also a possibility that Mayo could opt to play the game at Hyde Park with Roscommon travelling to Castlebar for the next two championship meetings of the teams.
