Hands off VECs – Harkin

There must be no cutbacks in the training and education programmes operated by Vocational Educational Committees and FÁS and, where demand exists they must be expanded, according to Independent MEP Marian Harkin . 

This week she called for exemption for VECs from reduction of their middle management posts needed to ensure the effective delivery of services to those who will be seeking employment opportunities when economic recovery occurs.

Pat the Cope to lobby commission on dairy sector

Pat the Cope Gallagher TD this week said that he is lobbying the EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Marian Fischer Boel to ensure that a higher level of export refunds are made available to the Irish dairy sector.

Fair deal needed for – O’Reilly

European election candidate, Senator Joe O’Reilly has slammed the absence of a Grocery Supplies Code of Practice for giant supermarkets in Ireland and said it highlighted the need for an enhanced agency to enforce such a code, like the Irish Office of Fair Trading proposed by Fine Gael, along with Fine Gael Food Spokesperson Deputy Andrew Doyle.
