Castlerea and Western Gaels meet in local derby

Seamus Duke

Abbey Hotel O’Rourke Cup

Padraig Pearses v St Faithleachs (on Saturday in Pairc an Piarsiagh at 7 pm)

St Faithleachs were beaten by five points by Strokestown last weekend and have a tough prospect here and a long trip to the south of the county. Pearses had a hard-fought draw with Kilmore last weekend. This should be a good competitive game – but Pearses at home might be the better bet.

Prediction: Padraig Pearses.

Castlerea St Kevins v Western Gaels (on Saturday in Castlerea at 7 pm)

Castlerea were beaten by Kilbride by five points last weekend and continue to struggle without a full team. Western Gaels played twice in the past week, beating Kilbride and then losing out by a point to Elphin. This will be a tough game between two teams who had to play three times in the championship semi-final last summer. On form Western Gaels should win.

Prediction: Western Gaels.

Kilbride v Elphin (on Saturday in Kilbride at 6 pm)

Both sides won well at the weekend, with Kilbride doing very well against Castlerea, while Elphin pipped Western Gaels by a point. This looks a very evenly-matched game. I’ll sit on the fence.

Prediction: A draw.

Kilmore v Strokestown (on Saturday in Kilmore at 7 pm)

Kilmore drew with Pearses last weekend, which was a good result. Strokestown scored a very good win against St Faithleachs. This looks like another very close call. I’ll give Kilmore the hesitant nod to win it at home.

Prediction: Kilmore.

St Brigids v Clann na nGael (on Saturday in Kiltoom at 7 pm)

Brigids are going along very well at the top of the table. Clann are also doing well, although they were surprised last weekend by St Croans. Always a well contested local derby – but Brigids have to be fancied.

Prediction: St Brigids.

St Croans v St Aidans (on Saturday in Ballintubber at 7 pm)

Croans had a morale-boosting win against Clann na nGael and will be looking forward to this game against St Aidans. The Ballyforan side were beaten last week by St Aidans but will travel here hoping to win. Maybe Croans at home will be good enough if they can get out a full team.

Prediction: St Croans.
