All-Ireland Colleges Senior C Football Final
Scoil Mhuire, Strokestown .... 1-11
Aquinas Grammar School, Belfast .... 2-3
County Roscommon’s purple patch in Colleges football continued last weeked when Scoil Mhuire, Strokestown were not found wanting as they faced Aquinas of Belfast in the All-Ireland Colleges Senior C Final.
The Strokestown team ensured they would not find themselves in the shadow of Convent of Mercy, Roscommon’s successes at ladies level by storming to a deserved five-point win (1-11 to 2-3).
This famous triumph led to great celebrations in Strokestown as the team, mentors and all associated with the school and area rejoiced in a major All-Ireland triumph for Scoil Mhuire.
Strokestown got off to a dream start, settling any potential nerves by going four points to no score ahead by the 23rd minute. Aquinas responded with a goal however, the scorer Tim Durkan, his tap-in leaving Strokestown under no illusions about the challenge ahead.
Strokestown responded in the style of champions when Dara Jones netted and his side duly went in 1-4 to 1-0 in front at the break.
Early in the second half the Belfast school showed their mettle with Durkan netting again and this, allied to an earlier point, dramatically brought the sides level. All to play for, and as nerve-wracking as Strokestown’s travelling support might have feared.
Hannity put Aquinas ahead but it was now that Scoil Mhuire showed tremendous resolve. They would finish the match by far the strongest. A succession of fine points saw them reassert their control of the game.
As the clock ticked on it became increasingly obvious that Scoil Mhuire had an All-Ireland within their grasp. Stout defence was called for for fear that the Belfast might poach late goals but Strokestown held out for a thoroughly deserved victory.
