Naughten slams scrapping of Carers’ Strategy

Local TD Denis Naughten, right, has stated that he is “extremely disappointed” with the “short-sighted” decision by the Government not to proceed with a national strategy for carers.

Deputy Naughten said that the decision to abandon this plan is not due to the recession, as many improvements for carers did not have to involve additional funding and may even have saved money. “For example, by introducing an Integrated Case Management Service through the Department of Social and Family Affairs the process of determining entitlements to services from housing to medical cards could be simplified, thus saving money on administration,” stated Deputy Naughten.

“With 2,567 carers in County Roscommon, it is clear that this decision will have a direct impact on the lives on many people locally.”
