One of the challenges that this presents is that staff employed in such locations are trained to quality standards. The National Training Strategy has a national target of 17,000 fully trained childcare practitioners by 2010. The participation in County Roscommon is very good to date. The Strategy group recommends that FETAC Level 5 would be a minimum requirement for childcare practitioners.
County Roscommon VEC in consultation with Roscommon County Childcare Committee is now offering a full FETAC Level 5 Childcare Programme in Roscommon Town, Castlerea and Boyle. The programme runs over a two-year period with two modules in Autumn Term and two in the Spring Term. The programme leads to a major FETAC Level 5 Award in Childcare. Classes commence in January and September of each year and run for 12-14 weeks, one night per module per week from 7 pm to 10 pm.
The FETAC Level 5 modules on offer for the Autumn 2008 term will include the following: Work Experience, Classroom Assistant and Integrating Children with Additional Needs (Special Needs) in Castlerea; Child Development and Working in Childcare in Boyle and Roscommon. Please note the later start date for the Classroom Assistant in Castlerea.
In order to achieve a FETAC Level 5 Major Award in Childcare, participants must complete 8 modules. Students are encouraged to pursue this major award. County Roscommon VEC are a registered provider with FETAC and have a fully operation Quality Assurance system in place. All the modules listed above can be viewed on the FETAC website www.fetac.ie.
