Ten of the best

Bear a Bear an Raille Division Two

Shiven Rovers 3 v Roscommon Town 2

Dave Dibble

This game saw Shiven Rovers B take the runners up spot in Division Two, and sees Lisnamult Celtic go into the play off spot where they will play Cam Celtic B, after a real battle with ten-man Roscommon Town.

Roscommon Town were disappointed at not picking up a draw from this game. The Town were far the better side for long parts of the game.

With just a minute gone on the clock, Rovers won the first corner of the game, which was taken by Doyle who picked out McKelvey, but his shot went just wide of the Town goal. After some good build-up play from the Town, O’Keeffe’s shot went over the Rovers’ crossbar.

The first 15 minutes was very even, though Noone had a great chance to open the scoring but saw his shot go wide of Kilroy in the Rovers goal. Rovers won three corners in a row, and Rovers opened the scoring with a fine header from Turley. 35 minutes into the game, Roscommon Town went down to ten men when O’Keeffe went off with a knee injury and Roscommon went in trailing by one goal at half time.

Pat Mullins’ half time team talk worked wonders. Within ten minutes, Town were right back in the game when Dermott scored to level the game. Town’s joy was short lived. After two great saves from Walshe in the Town goal, the ball was not cleared by the Town defenders and was picked up by Rovers McKelvey to give them the lead.

Rovers started to turn the screw, looking to finish the game off, but Walshe was in great form in the Town goal and made a string of saves to keep the Town in touch. Finally Rovers got the break with a 20-yard strike from Delaney to put Rovers in the driving seat.

To the Town’s credit, they never stop playing football and with Noone in midfield, and playing outstanding all night, they were always in with a chance. On 86 minutes player manager Pat Mullins turned the game upside down when he scored to put the Town right back into the game.

After the goal, Rovers were on the back foot for the last few minutes of the game. Final score, Shiven Rovers B 3 Roscommon Town 2. Pat Mullins team deserved a point from this game as they were far the better side for long periods of the game. Noone, Flanagan and Walshe all had outstanding games for Roscommon Town.
