A brand new Toyota Corolla car for a year and nominations to two of the country’s most successful stallions were confirmed this week as the highlights of this year’s Charity Auction at the Roscommon Lions Club’s Cheltenham Preview in the Abbey Hotel, Roscommon (Monday, March 3rd, 2008).

Tickets for the event have gone on sale this week and are available from all Lions Club members, as well as in the Abbey Hotel, Celtic Bookmakers in Roscommon and Athlone and Eight Til Late.

Announcing details of the prizes, Roscommon Lions Club President John F. Hanley paid tribute to Dermot Hughes of Toyota Car Sales, Athlone Road, Roscommon, Sean Mulryan of Ballymore Stud and the proprietors of Coolmore Stud for their generous support for the big charity auction.

As a result of their generosity the use of a Toyota Corolla for a year – fully-taxed – and nominations to top class stallions ‘Ballingarry’ from  Sean Mulryan’s Ballymore Stud and ‘Westener’ from Coolmore Stud will now be under the hammer when local auctioneer John Earley presides at the popular auction during the Preview on March 3rd

Demot Hughes Car Sales, Athlone Road, Roscommon is making a substantial contribution to the Lions Club Cheltenham Preview for the second year running and this generous prize is expected to reach a significant return at auction.

Nominations to two top class stallions will also be under the hammer on Monday night, March 3rd in the Abbey Hotel. ‘Westener’, owned by Coolmore Stud, is a nine-year-old stallion standing at Castlehyde Stud, one of the national hunt branches of Coolmore Stud. He stands for a fee of €6,000. He is a five-time Group 1 winner, four in France and the Gold Cup in York. Westerner won €1,600,000 in prize-money during his racing career. The nomination prize has been presented to Roscommon Lions Club for this special auction and is greatly appreciated.

‘Ballingarry’ is owned by Sean Mulryan and stands at Haras de de Mezeray in France.  He is also nine years old and won two Group 1 races when trained by Aidan O’Brien.

Two other fantastic prizes will be offered for auction on the night. A weekend at the fabulous Lough Rynn Castle Estate and Golf Club has been very kindly offered by Alan Hanly of the Hanly Group and a very special Satinwood and Rosewood kidney-shaped writing table with embossed leather top and walnut inlays will also be presented to the top bidders thanks to the generosity of Aidan Donnelly of Town & Country, Athleague.

Roscommon Lions Club has confirmed this week that a raffle with two very special prizes will also take place on the night of the Preview. A trip to the Prix de l’Arc in Paris awaits the winner with €500 in spending money thrown in while the second prize is equally special for racing enthusiasts – a chauffeur driven trip for two to Punchestown for the racing festival, a treat which also includes a gala lunch and VIP passes for the winner.

Tickets for the raffle are priced at €50 each. For tickets and more information telephone 090-6625626.
