Education Minister Mary Hanafin will be in Elphin on Thursday next, January 17th at noon to perform the official opening of a new extension to Elphin Community College.
In a statement issued this week, the Board of Management stated, “We are absolutely delighted to finally have our extension built and to have our school operating on its long-awaited single campus. This is after a campaign which began in November 1998. Following a meeting with the then Minister for Education Mr. Micheál Martin, which was attended by parents’ and teachers’ representatives, and public representatives, a schedule of accommodation was approved by the Department of Education in July 1999. Since then there has been a tireless drive by parents, teachers, Board of Management, the CEO and Co. Roscommon VEC, and the people of Elphin, to make this a reality. Intensive lobbying of all public representatives took place and we would like to thank all who worked so hard over the last nine years. It would be impossible to quantify the amount of time, effort and sheer determination that has gone into this project and the simple refusal to accept ‘no’ for an answer.
“Having received funding approval in March 2006 the entire process of design, planning permission and construction was completed by September 2007. This achievement must be accredited to the professionalism of our engineer Mr. Michael O’Callaghan, the main contractor Mr. Gerry Connell and all the service providers involved in completing the building. We are very proud of our achievement as we understand that it is among the first second level building projects to be completed under the Department of Education’s devolved scheme. On Thursday 17th January 2008 all are welcome to come and celebrate with us the opening of our new extension.”
