Paddy’s Day in November for Shannon Gaels

Junior B Football Final replay

Shannon Gaels 0-12

Clan na nGael  1-8

It was a disappointing weekend for the Clan na nGael club as they lost in the Junior Football Final replay (B level) to add to their defeat in the O’Gara Cup Final.

This loss – the game was also played in Knockcroghery – came via the slimmest of margins as Shannon Gaels held on for a famous one-point win.

Shannon Gaels had the better of the first half, leading by 8 to 5 at the break, with the Johnstown club paying the price for a subdued first half showing.

Clan lifted their game on the resumption however and, showing the battling qualities one associates with the club, they moved back into contention.

Clan had the margin back to a point in a see-saw finale and even missed a late free which, if converted, would have led to a second successive draw.

Shannon Gaels held out for a victory which no-one will begrudge and veteran Paddy Murray (scorer of three points) and co. were celebrating a famous win at the final whistle.
