Mayor: ‘Support the International Reunion’


This summer, between the 1st-11th August, Roscommon people from around the world will meet up in Roscommon for an extensive and varied programme of activities and fun. 

  Mayor Tom Crosby has urged all Roscommon people to participate fully in the events being organised, stating the floowing: “I am urging all people of Roscommon heritage to visit the county during the International Reunion celebrations. You will be pleasantly surprised at all the facilities and activities available in the county that are second to none”.

  County Manager Frank Dawson reiterated this call and praised the contribution of the Roscommon Associations worldwide to the development of the county.

  This year the International Reunion Launch in conjunction with the Castlerea Rose Festival Committee starts off in Castlerea on Wednesday August 1st with the official opening and parade – touted as one of the biggest parades in the West of Ireland.

  On Thursday 2nd August Roscommon Life will be launched in the County Library Headquarters. This will be the 31st edition of the annual originally known as Roscommon Association Yearbook which has proven to be a sought after production and a great record of activities in Roscommon. 

Roscommon International Reunion Expo will take place in King House on Friday 3rd August.

  The Rose of Castlerea selection will take place in the Stagger Inn, Castlerea on Friday 3rd August. 

  The August Bank Holiday weekend in County Roscommon is jam packed with events and activities for all the family with festivals in many of the towns and villages throughout the county. The Boyle Arts Festival (www.boylearts.com) will be in full swing. This will be ten days of festival activities, music, art, drama, workshops family fun and much more. The internationally renowned O’Carolan Harp Festival will take place in Keadue during the August Bank Holiday weekend as will the Castlerea Rose Festival. 

  Following the August Bank Holiday weekend activities will continue for participants of the International Reunion with a visit to Castlecoote House. A forum for officers of all the Roscommon Associations will be held at Castlecoote House to discuss upcoming events such as The Gathering 2013, Connect Ireland, RE:CONNECT and future links. Roscommon GAA Race Day will take place on Tuesday 7th August. 

  The highlight of the celebrations will be the International Reunion Banquet in the Abbey Hotel on Wednesday August 8th. Music for the occasion is being supplied by Brendan Shine and his band. 

  Roscommon International Reunion Golf takes place on Thursday August 9th in Roscommon Golf Club. 

  This will be followed on Friday August 10th by a traditional Irish night in Roscommon Arts Centre. The show is titled ‘Percy French Remembered’ and will be performed by The Percy French Quartet from County Down. It celebrates the life, music, poetry and times of that great Roscommon man of many talents. Roscommon International Reunion will conclude with an Ecumenical Service and Farewell lunch in Portahard Church on Saturday 11th August.
