Local County Councillor John Naughten has welcomed the announcement by Minster for Transport, Leo Varadkar TD, that the N6 Athlone bypass will not be redesignated as a motorway.
In response to the Minister’s statement in the Dáil, Cllr. Naughten said: “I am very glad to see the Minister has rejected the NRA’s application. The redesignation would have resulted in the prohibition agricultural vehicles on the road which would have caused huge inconvenience to the members of the farming community who currently use the bypass to access land on both sides of Athlone.
“Furthermore, I would have a great deal of concern as to the safety issues which would arise from the increased speed limit of a motorway being in force on a road with such a significant number of junctions,” Cllr. Naughten concluded.
