Vita House expaning services

Over the years Vita House, Roscommon, has provided a confidential counselling support service for those affected by cancer. We are now expanding and developing these services by embarking with a group of professionals and dedicated volunteers to establish Roscommon Cancer Support Centre.

A number of people have been active in this development including our numerous volunteers and the transition year students from Roscommon Community College.  They with their art teacher Ms. Gillian Gannon, have been busy designing a logo for our service.

Roscommon Cancer Support Centre will provide supportive interventions and activities that complement the medical model of treatment with the intention of improving the quality of life of those who avail of the service. Roscommon Cancer Support Centre at Vita House is a place of peace and hope, where the dignity and privacy of individuals are respected at all times.

With the development and expansion of the Vita House premises in Abbey Street, the Cancer Support Centre will have drop-in facilities with a library and information will be easily accessible from trained volunteers and staff.

We will be offering a range of services including mindfulness meditation, exercise workshops, complementary therapies, and our counselling services. We are also working closely with many other organisations to ensure that what we provide will complement other services.

The Roscommon Cancer Support centre is affiliated to the Irish Cancer Society. We welcome this acknowledgement as part of the national network of Cancer Support Systems and we benefit in the sharing of knowledge, information, idea’s, experiences and advice.

We are hoping that our services will be up and running by the end of September. In the meantime we are actively engaging in developing our literature, in training programmes for our volunteers and in planning fundraising activities.

We are anxious that we get as many volunteers as possible, for our drop-in services. Also if you have therapeutic training or specific skills that would increase the services we could offer, for e.g. complimentary or creative art therapies we would appreciate your involvement. If you are interested please contact us at 090-6625898 or by email at

Vita House would like to thank the Roscommon Cancer Support committee, the therapists for their work over the years, Mr. Frank Chambers and Ms. Gillian Gannon and students from the Community College for their logo design.

We would also like to thank everybody who supported our fundraising activities to date, these include individual donations, the ‘Girls’ in the Wednesday club at the Holly Tree, and those who gave generously to our fundraising collection at the County GAA match on July 1st 2012.

A date for your diary is Sunday September 9th, when we are holding a 10k run/walk in Roscommon Town which we hope will be our main fundraising event of the year. There will be further information available nearer the time.
