Senior board members and executives of Connacht Gold Co-op met the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney recently at the co-opís head office in Tubbercurry. It was the first formal meeting between the co-op and Mr. Coveney since he was appointed Minister fifteen months ago.
The Connacht Gold representatives highlighted the importance of Ireland maintaining its current level of EU funding in the forthcoming negotiations on the Common Agricultural Policy and of ensuring that any changes in the single farm payment do not discriminate against active farmers.
The impact of the closure of REPS on farm incomes and the economy in the west and north west was also highlighted and the Connacht Gold delegation stressed the importance of an early announcement of a continuation of the Agri-Environment Options Scheme (AEOS).
The issue of more equitable and cost-efficient systems of administering environmental, food safety and animal health regulations was also discussed with the Minister.
