Athlone Golf Club

Like ‘Masters Week,’ the coming week could be known as ‘Captains Week’ with a full schedule of events. 

  Friday 15th June: Captains Mixed Foursomes - 15 Holes S’ford   Kick-off is at 4pm. Presentation of Prizes: Friday 9.30pm sharp.  

  Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th June: The Captain’s Prize 24 Hole Stroke Competition. The top 10% from Saturday and the top 10% from Sunday go forward to a six-hole play-off over holes 1,2,3,16,17 & 18.

The last card on Sunday is 1pm.

   This is the first major of the year and the second round of Golfer of the Year. All of the men’s club are invited and encouraged to participate. May the best man win! Presentation of Prizes: 9.30pm sharp  

  A Message from the Captain: ‘it is every golfers ambition to win a captain’s prize and I want to wish you all every success in the week ahead. There can only be one winner but by being able to compete, you are already a winner.

  ‘Thank you to all the officers and committees who have been involved in the arranging of competitions, the cards, the prizes and all of the general arrangements that we tend to take for granted. I must also acknowledge the great work done by the volunteers who selflessly give of their time to maintain and enhance the course on a weekly basis. Enjoy the week, good golf to all. It could be you!

Carrick on Shannon Golf Club

Another successful Golf Classic, the tenth in total since we started out on fundraising golf classics. The weather was favourable for the most part and with over 60 teams competing the competition was as always competitive.

  102 points set on Sunday was the mark with no other team breaking the ton, Michael Gallagher, Martin Talbot, Liam Whyte & Damien Duignan dove tailed well to win by 3 from Sean Bohan, Collie Griffin, Shane Kelly & John Coffey on 99 with a better back 9 than Hugh Bracken, Leo Kavanagh, Seamus & Niall Sweeney, 4th placed was claimed by Leo Mulvey, Tom Daly, Sean Gilmartin & Tommy Flynn on 96 with the better back 9 than Keith Duignan, Sean Bohan, Paul O’Brien & Gordon Kavanagh on 96. The Yellow ball competition was won by Liam & Joe Bruen, Kieran Oates & Bearach Doherty, with 45 points. 

  The Birdies was won by Sean Bohan. Nearest the Pin ladies: Carmel Stritch, for the Gents: Sean Bohan. 

  Longest Drive: Ladies Brenda Kelly, Gents: David McDermott. The club are again grateful to our very generous sponsor who wishes to remain nameless. This is the umpteen time the same person has sponsored and the success of the classics over the years is due mainly to their generosity. We would also like to thank other sponsors of this year’s event, Drino, Glancy’s Elphin, Anchorage Bar, Noone Carpets, David O’Dowd, David Lavin, and Kartel. Of course a big thank you to all the Members who played and the many visitors who also participated, thank You.      

  Last weekends King & Moffatt sponsored Golfer of the Year stableford was reduced to one day on account of the heavy rainfall on Thursday & Friday. Despite the deluge the course was remarkably dry, and this was reflected in the scoring with two 45’s recorded, leader in the clubhouse all day was PJ Sharkey (15) with 45 and he remained so until the last card arrived from Joe Bruen (18) also with 45 but with a superior B9 of 26 points to claim top spot. Tommy Mulvey (11) with 41 was 3rd David McDermott (6) took the gross with 35, Cat 3 went to Bearach Doherty (20) with 39, Cat 4 Seamus Sheeran (23) 38. F9 Pat Conlon (26) 22 B9. 

   Next weekend gents 4 ball, play Sat & Sunday as always book online @ www.carrickgolfclub.ie Friday June 15th  9-hole competition over holes 1-5 & 15-18 with re entry. 

Roscommon Golf Club

There was a large gathering in the clubhouse on Saturday night for the presentation of the President’s prizes and members were unanimous in their tributes to the President Gerry Keegan and for all he has contributed to the club over the years. Lady Captain, Marina Dolan, introduced the winners of the President’s Prize to the ladies. 

  The winner was Geraldine Relihan with Sheila Fallon in second place and Paula Quinn in third place. The winner of the gross was Sinead Benedetti. Yvonne Waldron was in fourth place, Joan Hannon in fifth and Kay Ruane in sixth. Marie McManus had the best score on the first day and Rosemary O’Brien had the best score on the second day. The winner of the President’s Prize to the junior girls was Cloe O’Connor,

  Captain John Cunningham introduced the winners of the President’s Prize to the men.  The winner was John Walker with Shane McConn the runner-up. Pearse Mellett and Eddie Miley reached the semi -final stages. Ben McGahan won the President’s prize to the junior boys.

  On Sunday the Open Junior, Intermediate and Minor Scratch Cups, sponsored by MJ Farrell, Jewellers took place. The winner of the Junior Scratch Cup was Michael Connaughton with 73 gross. In second place was John Connaughton with 74 gross. Adrian Gunning had the best nett score of 69. The winner of the Intermediate Scratch Cup was Gerry Naughton with 77 gross. In second place was Roger Hynes with 79 gross. James Walker had the best nett score of 66. 

  The winner of the Minor Scratch Cup was Michael Lennon with 87 gross. In second place was John O’Gara with 90 gross. Michael Healy had the best nett score of 67. Francis Ferguson won the prize for the par 3’s. Gertie Spillane won the ladies nine-hole competition with 18 points. 

  There was a nine-hole competition for ladies on the bank holiday Monday and the winner was Carol O’Donnell with 23 points. In second place was Margaret Kennedy with 21 points. Unfortunately Tuesday’s 18-hole competition was cancelled due to the inclement weather as was Friday’s Open Day. 

Strokestown Golf Club

The Lady Captain’s Prize to Men takes place this Sunday. For further information contact 087-2071520. There was a great turnout of teams at the weekend for the Hope House Classic, which was organised by Breege Silke.   

  A presentation took place in the clubhouse on Sunday night. Winners were as follows: Men 1st J. McGowan, TJ Prendergast, T. O’Malley, S. Kennedy (99); 2nd J. Galley, T. Carleton, J.Summers, P. Lally (98); 3rd P. Boyle Golf Club

Last Sunday’s Bartley Moran Trophy was won by Lorcan Egan 61. 2nd Stephen Bohan 62, Gross Sean Heslin, 3rd Michael Gilmartin 62. Results from the June weekend fundraiser. 1st Ted Hester, Mick Moran, Lewis Shaw 89pts, 2nd Michael Simon, Pat Brogan, Padraig O’Connell 88pts, 3rd Charlie O’Donnell, Michael Simon, Willie Tiernan 88pts. Jim Mooney, Gerry Emmet and Michael Keville 42pts won the Yellow Ball.

   Competitions for this week are the Men’s Competition on Thursday night; Friday is social golf with a twelve hole Scramble. Next Sundays competition will be an 18 hole foursomes.

  Golf lessons continue on Saturday mornings at 11.00am for Boys and Girls.  

The June draw was postponed last Sunday and will now be held next Sunday at 9.00pm.  Anyone interested in joining please put entry in scorecard box. In other news, good luck to all those sitting their Junior/leaving Cert exams and also best wishes to Michael Smith who celebrated a notable birthday recently. Happy Birthday.
