Fantastic competition in Williamstown

Williamstown Handball Club once again hosted a fantastic weekend of one-wall handball with grades from U-9 up to Masters. A large number of Roscommon players took part from various clubs like St. Comans and Mount Talbot.

The Men’s B title stayed in Williamstown for 2012 when Declan Connaughton put in a fine performance to take the title against a valiant Nevan McCartan in a close affair. The first game went Connaughton’s way after a series of long, tiring rallies and some excellent diving ‘gets’ saw the Williamstown man’s tally build up and eventually he took the first game 15-10.

In the second game Connaughton seemed to tire a little but Nevan couldn’t seem to find his kill shot and let some potentially point-winning shots hit the outside of the court. The Williamstown man took advantage of this and began to find another gear and eventually ran out a 15-12 winner in a game played in an excellent sporting manner with all the excitement of a cup final thrown in for good measure.

In Ladies B competition Karen Lawlor from Ó Raghailligh’s in Drogheda overcame Siobhán Tully from St. Coman’s on a scoreline of 30-6. Marina Kilduff, St. Coman’s was runner-up in the Ladies B Plate Final. In the Ladies Open Plate Final Hilary Rushe, St. Coman’s, Roscommon defeated Katie Costello, St. Coman’s, Roscommon.

Training continues on Thursdays at 8 pm for minors and 9 pm for adults in Kilglass Gaels Sportshall. Anyone interested is invited to attend. Contact Anthony Mahady on 087-7640677 or Eddie Conboy on 086-0528884 for more details.
