Boyle Golf Club

Results from last weekend’s club fundraiser to follow next week. Thursday night’s Mens Competition was won by Ross Andrew on 30 pts. 2nd was Michael Simon on 28 pts. 3rd: James Cooke, 28 pts. Friday’s Scramble was won by Gary Carty, Aisling Gaughran and Paul Richardson. Well done to Paul who won on his first Scramble. 2nd was Moira Egan, Lionel Lynn and Pat Conroy. 3rd was Stephen Bohan, Gareth Gilmartin and Sandra McCrann.

  Competitions for this week are the Mens Competition on Thursday night, Friday is social golf with a 12-hole scramble and next Sunday is the Bartley Moran Trophy which will be an 18-hole stroke. In Inter club news, well done to our Jimmy Bruen Team who won against Enniscrone last Monday. Practice for the Cecil Ewing Team is continuing with competition for places very tight. Golf lessons continue on Saturday mornings at 11 am for Boys and Girls.

Carrick-on-Shannon Golf Club

Another successful Golf Classic, the tenth in total since we started out on  fundraising golf classics. 102 points set on Sunday was the mark with no other team breaking the ton, Michael Gallagher, Martin Talbot, Liam Whyte & Damien Duignan dovetailed well to win by 3 from Sean Bohan, Collie Griffin, Shane Kelly & John Coffey on 99 with a better back 9 than Hugh Bracken, Leo Kavanagh, Seamus & Niall Sweeney, 4th placed was claimed by Leo Mulvey, Tom Daly, Sean Gilmartin & Tommy Flynn on 96 with the better back 9 than Keith Duignan, Sean Bohan, Paul O’Brien & Gordon Kavanagh on 96. The Yellow ball competition was won by Liam & Joe Bruen, Kieran Oates & Bearach Doherty, with 45 points. The Birdies was won by Sean Bohan, Nearest the Pin ladies Carmel Stritch, for the Gents Sean Bohan, Longest Drive Ladies Brenda Kelly, Gents David McDermott. 

  The club are again grateful to our very generous sponsor who wishes to remain nameless, this is the umpteen time the same person has sponsored and the success of the classics over the years are due mainly to their generosity. We would also like to thank other sponsors of this years event, Drino, Glancy’s Elphin, Anchorage Bar, Noone Carpets, David O’Dowd, David Lavin, Kartel. Of course a big thank you to all the members who played and the many visitors who also participated, thank you.      

  Next weekend we have the King & Moffatt sponsored Golfer of the Year competition, play Saturday June 9 or Sunday June 10. As always book online @ Friday June 8th: 9-hole competition over holes 1-5 & 15-18 with re entry. 

Roscommon Golf Club

Giles McDonagh was the winner of the open competition on Friday with 43 points. Sean Collins was in second place with 41 points (back 9) and Liam Casey was third with 41 points also. Sinead Benedetti won the ladies’ competition with 39 points.

  The winning team in the club classic, sponsored by P.J. Donnellan, was Mario Costello, Enda Maloney, Brian Feeley and Gerry Robinson with a score of 97 points.

  The winners of the club foursomes, sponsored by the Hollywood Bar, were Charlie Brennan and Jim Finn. The President’s Prize is at the quarter final stage with the following four battling it out for the prestigious prize: Pearse Mellett v Sean McConn and Johnny Walker v Eddie Miley. The final will take place on Saturday next 9th June at 4 pm and will be preceded by a 3-person scramble.

  The Ladies’competition on Tuesday, which was sponsored by George Bannon Sports, was won by Anne McNally with a fantastic score of 41points from Mary Gilligan with 39 points and Joan O’Gara also with 39 points.

  The winner of the men’s senior competition on Thursday was Frank Mullen with Jim Tunney in second place and John Cunningham in third place. Margaret Brennan was the winner of the senior ladies’ competition with Mary Mellett in second place and Pat Pierce is third place.

  There was a large gathering of ladies at the club last Thursday evening for the presentation of the very popular Spring League competition. The evening commenced with a highly informative talk on golf nutrition and fitness given by dietician Sharon O’Brien from Molloy’s Pharmacy. This was followed by the presentation of the Spring League prizes and the winning team, by a margin of one & a half points, comprised of Mary Lalor, Lady Captain Marina Dolan, Linda Maxwell (sponsor), Kay Ruane, Mary Cunningham, Bretta McCarthy, Ethel Keenan & Moira Regan. As captain of the winning team Mary Lalor thanked Linda Maxwell for her very generous sponsorship of the competition and commended her as creator of this highly popular event. The runners up were Team A captained by Mary O’Keeffe & June Halliday. All other outstanding prizes were also presented on the night and finally Lady Captain Marina Dolan made a special presentation to Linda Maxwell to mark her achieving a hole in one on the twelfth hole a few weeks previously. 

  There will be a Ladies golf outing on Thursday June 21st to Mullingar GC. details of which are on the ladies notice board. Ladies are encouraged to add their name to the list and enjoy the day out. 

  The next lotto draw will be on Sunday 9th June with the jackpot standing at €1,900 and €100 in the lucky dip from all entries in the event of the jackpot not being won. Members are urged to get their entries in during the week.

The annual CBS past pupils’ competition was held on Sunday and the following were the prize-winners – 1st: Paul Farrell 42 points, 2nd: Enda Maloney 40, 3rd: Michael Healy 39, 4th: Gerry Robinson 39, 5th: Gerry Naughton 38, 6th: Seamus Mulryan 38. The gross was won by Ken Kearney with 38 points.

Strokestown Golf Club

There was a huge turnout for the Fore Alliance in Strokestown over the weekend. The club wishes to thank the members of all four clubs for their great support once again this year. The winners were as follows: Mens: 1st Joe Mulvihill 43, 2nd: Joe Ryan 43 and 3rd: Adrian King 41. Ladies – 1st: Orla McGuinness 40, 2nd Anne Meagher 40 and 3rd Marcella McDermott 39. On this Saturday 9th June and Sunday 10th June the club will host a golf classic in support of Hope House which is a rehabilitation centre specialising in the treatment of alcohol, drugs, gambling and other dependencies. For tee times contact Breege on 087-1265494. The cost is €140 per team of 4 which includes refreshments which will be available before and after the golf. Sponsorship is welcome and there will be a presentation in the clubhouse on Sunday night commencing at 9 pm. Numerous prizes are to be won. All are welcome.
