After releasing their debut album last November, Folk group Fling will appear at JJ Harlows in the Market Square, Roscommon on Saturday.
The band has been together almost two years and consists of Pauli Smalls, Liam Carroll, Maeve Kelly, Ger Flynn and Liam Conway. They have received rave reviews at a number of well-known festivals across Europe and have received airplay on national stations here and in the continent.
After taking up an invitation to China they played at the St Patrick’s celebrations and then performed to a sell out tour of northern Spain.
On Sunday Hickory Wind will play in the middle bar from 6 pm.
Knockcroghery’s finest Vinegar Hill will play in Harlow’s this Monday (Race Night).
The five-piece folk group who are known as much for their A’cappella as they are for their acoustic. Their influences are Sean Keane, Solas, Luke Kelly, Four men and a dog, Danu, the Sawdoctors and the Singing Rain.
Among their musical instruments you are likely to hear is the bazouki, bodhran, flute and tin whistles.
Vinegar Bill is made up of Aine O’Connor and two sets of O’Connor Brothers. Well worth a visit after the last race in Roscommon.
Tuesday rounds off with Carmel Sheerin and Paul Hull under the banner of North and South.

American legend John Shannon at The Coachman’s Inn
The Coachman’s Inn will play host on Tuesday 12th June to American folk artist John Shannon who performs live at the venue. Shannon is an American modern folk guitarist, vocalist and composer. He has played with artists like Haale, Pyeng Threadgill, Sonya Kitchell, Ruslan Sirota, Hiromi and has also recorded three albums as the leader of the instrumental jazz fusion trio Waking Vision. On April 29, 2008 he released his debut album as a solo artist, American Mystic.
Born in 1980, Shannon’s musical foundations began with guitar lessons at age six. After years of Led Zeppelin and Jimmy Page-inspired musical exploration, Shannon studied harmony and improvisation with a local pipe organist. Shannon later went on to graduate from the Berklee College of Music, where he began a series of organic musical explorations in the evolutionary instrumental trio Waking Vision together with friends Mitch Cohn (aka Catalyst, bassist for Lauryn Hill, Ashanti, Destiny’s Child) and Martin Valihora (drummer for Hiromi). In addition to his solo work, Shannon has spent the past several years performing and touring with an eclectic group of break-out stars.
It promises to be a great night’s entertainment for all concerned so make sure to get down to The Coachman’s Inn this Tuesday night to witness one of the leading stars of American folk music.

Entertainment this weekend at Rockford’s
Rockford’s niteclub and Jack’s live venue will hold a student promotion night this Friday where the entry fee for a student with valid I.D. is just five euro.
On Saturday there will be a double act with DJ Dermot Griffin in Rockfords and DJ Enda Griffin in Jack’s live venue.
