Strokestown into play-off as Clann fail to Shine

Shannonside FM SFC (Group A)

Strokestown 0-15 Clann na nGael 0-11

Strokestown’s championship hopes remain alive after an impressive performance and four-point win over Clann na nGael in Kiltoom on Saturday evening. The result now means that Strokestown will compete in the third-position play-offs for the quarter-finals while Clann face a relegation dog-fight with St. Croan’s and St. Aidan’s.

Clann, who lined out without injured county star Donie Shine, will be extremely deflated in light of this surprise outcome. They were looking to seal a win which would have guaranteed their quarter-final berth, however they were out-played and over-ran by Strokestown in the crucial final quarter to the game.

During this period they were out-scored by their northern rivals by 0-7 to 0-1 as Strokestown produced a second-half display which was reminiscent of their performance against Castlerea in the last round.

They now march on to the third-position play-off and on this form they will be an extremely difficult nut to crack. This latest performance will do their confidence the world of good for the remainder of the championship campaign.

Clann had the better of the opening half and led the contest at the break by two points – 0-8 to 0-6. Ronan O’Reilly, Graham Pettit, Jonathon Dunning, Enda Kenny and Mark Shine all registered scores for Dessie Dolan’s men while Conor Silke, Ruaridhi Molloy, John Rogers and David Parker found the range for the ‘Town in an enjoyable first half.

The teams exchanged points on the resumption and after O’Reilly had pushed Clann two points to the good midway through the second period Strokestown assumed control of proceedings with a spate of scores from Molloy, Silke and Daniel and John Rogers, handing them a five-point lead going into the closing moments of the game.

Substitute Alan Dunne’s injury-time consolation score was all a very disappointing Clann could muster as Joe Flynn’s men ran out deserving four-point winners at the final whistle.
