Golf notes

Athlone

The Athlone Golf Club Senior Scratch Cup took place last Sunday May 15th. In very tough conditions, current Irish International, Eddie McCormack playing off +2, put together two very steady rounds of 76 & 75 to claim the Maurice De Lacy Staunton Cup. Gerry Deegan (1) with rounds of 81/74 claimed second spot while another Athlone member Thomas O’Connor finished third with rounds of 75/81.

Special mention must also go to Chathail O’Malley of Westport who stormed up the leaderboard with a fantastic 72 in the second round.

Congratulations to our Jimmy Bruen Team who had a fine victory over Ballinasloe in the first round last week. In an excellent team performance, heroes of the hour were John Burns and John Costello who won the deciding match at the first tie hole away from home. Congratulations to manager Ray King and to the team on the day.
