Three of Comans top swimmers qualified for the Irish Senior Long Course Championships held at the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin from 28th April to the 1st May. Sarah Kelly aged 13, Olivia Fullard aged 16 and Claire Geoghegan aged 17, all competed over four days against the best of Irish and International swimmers.
On Day 1 Clare and Sarah competed against over 100 other swimmers in the 200m Freestyle where they finished 38th and 33rd respectively. Both girls also made the A final of the 200m Butterfly, where Sarah finished in 6th place (inside the qualifying time for the European Youth Olympic Festival Games) and Claire finished 16th overall. In her last event of Day 1 Sarah competed in the 1500m Freestyle which saw her finish in 3rd place. As only four of eight qualifying swimmers will go on to represent Ireland in the European Youth Olympic Festival Games in July 2011, we will all have to wait to see if Sarah Kelly is finally chosen by the Olympic Council to compete in this prestigious event.
All three girls were in action for Day 2 of the championships. Starting with the 100m Freestyle Clare finished in 34th and Sarah in 42nd place. Next Sarah and Olivia competed in the 400m Individual Medley. Sarah qualified for the A final where she finished in 10th place, and Olivia qualified for the B final where she finished 8th. Claire achieved a Personal Best in the 50m Butterfly but was unlucky to finish outside the semi-final stage. The final event of Day 2 for Sarah was the 800m Freestyle where she finished in 6th place.
On Day 3 Olivia swam an impressive race in the 400m Freestyle, achieving a Personal Best. Athough Sarah also competed in the event she withdrew from the B final. In the 100m Butterfly both Claire and Sarah competed in the semi-final stage. After reaching the final, which took place on Day 4, Sarah finished in 7th place.
On Day 4 Sarah and Olivia rounded off their four-day competition on a high note with an impressive swim in the 200m Individual Medley. Also competing in the 200m Individual Medley, Claire qualified for the B final where she finished in 5th place. Clare swam on in the 50m Freestyle to achieve her second Personal Best of the competition, but just missed out on a place in the semi-final.
Well done to all three Senior Comans swimmers who made our club extremely proud, and congratulations to you on your achievements. Thank you once again to the Comans coaches for all of their hard work with our swimmers.
