After trailing, ace Glenn recovered well in Hospital!

Last weekend the Hardball Championships kicked off in earnest with junior, senior and masters fixtures being played at venues throughout the country. St Coman’s Glenn Walsh breezed through his first round junior singles fixture in Hospital, Limerick. Glenn defeated Pat Murphy (Limerick) easily in the end on a scoreline of 18-21, 21-2, 21-1 and will play Jason Murray (Kildare) on Wednesday 18th May.

In the hardball junior doubles, Chris Doolin and Glenn Walsh (St Coman’s) will team up to take on Salthill’s Kevin Craddock and Trevor Hannon in Ballymoe on Saturday 21st at 5  pm. This month will see a tightly-packed handball CLAR with some players juggling the hardball and one-wall codes.

Last weekend saw the first of the one-wall tournaments take place on Inis Mor.  Saint Coman’s Nigel Neilan and Aengus Cunningham took part in the Men’s Open grade. Nigel lost out to the eventual finalist James Doyle (Armagh) 15-8.  Ballaghdereen’s Vinnie Moran defeated Nigel in the plate event 15-9. Aengus Cunningham lost out narrowly in the Men’s B on a scoreline of 17-15, to eventual winner Ger McGrath (Kilkenny). Aengus was neck and neck with Ger until the final minute when Ger pulled out two ace power serves. Aengus got some consolation by winning out the plate event.

Armagh favourite Charlie Shanks, renowned for his spin serves and offensive strategy, won out the Men’s Open grade. The ladies Open was won by Lorraine Havern (Down). The Men’s C grade saw Liam O’Ceallaigh put in a strong performance against the Inis Mor native, M. Joe Ó Maoilchiaráin. Deirdre Kelly, also from the Mount Talbot Club, lost out to Bridie Mulkerrins in the Ladies Challenger event.

Next weekend will again see clashes with the Hardball fixtures and the One-Wall code. Indeed it has been mooted that the One-Wall competitions on the CLAR should be scheduled for mid-June as precursor events to the National One-Wall Championships at Breaffy House, Mayo. Nevertheless, the Williamstown sanctioned tournament will see a greater participation from Roscommon clubs next weekend.  The Williamstown club has set up three courts in the adjacent community hall in the town. The 60x30 court has also been taped out, providing for simultaneous action on four courts next Saturday and Sunday. Roscommon players from the Mount Talbot, Fairymount and St Coman’s clubs will compete across several adult and juvenile grades.

The Open fixtures involving Roscommon players are: Nigel Neilan v Peter Davern at 2 pm; Chris Doolin v Ollie Cassidy at 2.30 pm; Deirdre Donohoe v Maighread Ni Dhuill at 4 pm; Marianna Rushe v Karen Lawlor at 4.15 pm; Pauline Gallagher v Hillary Rushe at 4.15 pm; Leona Doolin v Niamh Egan at 4.30 pm.

All-Ireland Community Games action will take place at Roscommon venues (Coman’s and Curraghboy) on the weekend of 28th-29th May. Roscommon will be represented by the U15 girl’s team of Caoimhe Shanagher, Fiona Tully, Jessica McDermott, Clodagh Beatty and Aoife Tully. Feile na nGael will take place later in June at Galway venues. Fixtures for the Roscommon Softball Interclub and Softball Championships will be made at the County Board meeting during this week. All names should be with respective club secretaries by weekend.

Mount Talbot Handball news: Last weekend several members from the Mount Talbot Handball Club took to the courts of the Aran Islands for the inaugural ‘Comórtas Aon Bhalla Inis Mór’.

In the highly-competitive mens C division Liam O’Ceallaigh played superbly before going down to the eventual champion, Stiofán Ó hIarnáin, in the semi-final. Deirdre and Mairéad Kelly played well in the ladies challenger division before going down to their more experienced opponents.

This coming weekend the club sends a number of competitors to Williamstown hoping to bring home some silverware at the Williamstown one-wall tournament. Further preparations are currently underway in anticipation of the inaugural Mount Talbot one-wall open scheduled to take place June 17th-19th

Currently heavyweights of the game including Robbie McCarthy, Vinnie Moran, Lorraine Havern & Ashley Prendiville are to take part with further top names to be confirmed, all eager to obtain the practice prior to the one-wall nationals. TG4 cameras are also set to be on-site throughout the weekend to catch all the action.
