Gallant ladies fall at final hurdle

Bord Gais Energy Div. 4 Final

Roscommon 2-6
Westmeath 1-11

The Roscommon ladies team produced a brave performance while been beaten by Westmeath by a two-point margin in the Bord Gais Energy Div. 4 Final in Cusack Park, Ennis on Saturday afternoon last.

Westmeath were slightly the better team overall however Roscommon could still have snatched victory during the final moments of the game had they availed of some of the chances that came their way.

There was very little to choose between the sides during the opening half and it was the Westmeath ladies who opened the scoring with corner-forward Karen Hegarty finding the range in the 4th minute.

Roscommon’s Claire Grehan equalised minutes later however Hegarty was on hand once more to restore her side’s early advantage with a well-taken point from play. Roscommon replied in the ideal fashion with a goal from corner-forward Jennifer Downey and further points from the same player and midfielder Sinead Cooney, a brace, saw them race into a five-point lead with 15 minutes played.

Fiona Claffey and the impressive Hegarty reduced the margin to three before Downey got her third point of the afternoon. However Westmeath would finish the half the stronger of the sides with three points from Hegarty, Katie Sommers and Emma Morris leaving only two points between the teams at the break.

The sides were level within moments of the re-start with Westmeath’s Ruth Kearney and Morris registering two fine points for their side. A goal from Laura Walsh pushed her side ahead in the 37th minute and another point from the prolific Hegarty stretched Westmeath’s lead to four as they took command of the tie.

Roscommon hauled themselves back into contention when substitute Cliondha McHugh goaled in the 49th minute of proceedings. They did push for an equaliser but sadly chances go begging during a frantic final ten minutes.

However it was fitting that Westmeath’s Hegarty, the best player on the field, brought proceedings to a close with a 59th minute point to seal a deserved win for her side.
