Golf Notes


Harry Rice Foresomes: Qualifiers will be available during the week on the website and on noticeboards. The Army Cup Qualifier takes place next Sunday. The open day continues every Wednesday through the summer.

There is a new Menís Beginners Initiative being started by the club. Beginning on April 20th, the offer includes six coaching lessons with Club Pro Kevin Grealy, explanation of the rules and etiquette of the game and an opportunity to play a few holes to put it all in to practice. The cost, now confirmed, will be Ä30. Niall Dowling will be co-ordinating the sessions, if you are interested or know anybody who may be, please contact Ita in the Office on (090) 64 92073. Last Sundayís 18 hole stableford was won by Declan Carty 41 pts, 2nd Jim Mooney 39 pts, Gross Brendan Gaffney, 3rd Michael Bermingham 39 pts.  Thursday nightís menís competition, the first of the season was won by Michael Keville 21 pts, 2nd Tom Rochford 21 pts, 3rd Tom Gallagher 20 pts. Winners of the spring League were Patrick Egan, Michael Reid and Ian Slaughter, 2nd Brendan Gaffney, John Cryan and Ted Hestor, 3rd John Tiernan, Ross Andrew and Niall Kearney.  Thanks to the organisers and everyone who took part. Congrats to all the winners. The draw details for the mixed foursomes are on the notice board, first round group matches to be completed before May 6th. Date for your diary is the Crumlin Classic on Easter Weekend. And finally from the archives Ö on the 9th March 1927 it was agreed that each player in inter club matches be responsible for their opponentís wine bill. It is unclear whether this was while they were playing of after the match! Competitions for this week are the Thursday night menís competition, Friday night will be the start of the scrambles, all welcome.  Sunday will be the voucher competition format will be 18-hole stroke.


The winner of Sunday April 10th Stableford Competition, sponsored by Creighton Aluminium: 1st Ignatius Hayden 44 pts; , 2nd Padraig Henry 41 pts; Cat 1 Jimmy Joyce 37 pts.; Cat 2 Michael Freyne 38 pts; Cat 3 Eugene Flanagan 40 pts.


Last weekend the club had the first GOY of the year with also the first running of the Cottage Jamestown sponsored Stableford. The club would like to welcome and thank Sham for his Sponsorship. A big field for this first GOY event saw Competition Secretary Sean Bohan (10) take top spot with 43 points, he pipped Tommy Flynn (11) who had 42 B9, Stephen Sheeran (18) was 3rd also with 42. Sean Murray (10) won the Gross. Dylan Beirne (9) won Cat 2 with 40, Michael Egan Logue (15) Cat 3 with 40 and Gerry Beirne (22) Cat 4 with 39. The 9ís were divided by Front James Connors (20) with 23 and Back Gerard McDermott (23) also with 23. The Birdies for previous competition went to Johnny Martin and Jordan Nally. Winners of birdies for Cottage Jamestown Stableford will be announced next week. Next Sunday April 17 the club has the second GOY in The King & Moffatt Stableford Book online. The first practice session for this yearís Pierce Purcell took place last Friday evening, there will be a practice sessions every Friday evening up until the home match v Co Sligo on May 28th. Next session Friday April 15th at 6 pm where the team will play in the Friday 14 hole competition. Winner of last Fridays 14 hole Brian Oates with 32 points. On Easter Saturday April 24th the Club is holding a fundraising social in the Bush Hotel. Tickets are now on Sale at Ä20 and are available from any Committee Member. 


Well done to the Ladies Intermediate Team who beat Mountbellew in Ballinasloe on Monday 11th April. The team, which won three out of the five matches, and was also leading on the other two, played great golf challenged by an extreme mix of rain, hailstones and wind. Ceannt Golf Societey

Itís time to dust down the golf clubs and polish the shoes as the first outing of  the year will take place on Sunday next, 16th April at Castlebar Golf Club. Tee off time is noon and with the reduced membership fee for 2011 of Ä30, we hope to see a large turnout of both current and new members.
