CBS progress in Juvenile B championship

Roscommon CBS 3-15

HRC Mountbellew 1-7

The Roscommon CBS Juvenile team progressed to the quarter final of the Connacht championship after a tough encounter in Ballygar. The scoreline belies the closeness of this game, as the result was in the balance up until the final ten minutes where the Roscommon team hit three quick fire goals.

CBS started well and dominated the first quarter with Gearóid Egan and Ciaran Casey controlling around the middle. Scores followed from Casey, Jack Earley, Brian Merriman and Henry Walshe to give the CBS a commanding lead. Mountbellew found it difficult to create scoring chances and had a number of wides before they registered their first score in the twentieth minute. CBS responded well despite injuries to Brian Farrell and Shane Nolan and points from Colin Gannon and K.J Farrell left the CBS leading by eight points to two at half time.

CBS started the second half promisingly with an early delivery into the full forward line being finished by Brian Merriman. It was at this stage that HRC Mountbellew began to mount their challenge with a rapid goal and three points. The CBS were finding it difficult to emerge from their own half and with their lead down to one point signs looked ominous. Scores became less frequent for the next couple of minutes as the ball was turned over regularly due to incessant pressure from both sides. The CBS made a push with about fifteen minutes to go, a great run and point from Ciaran Casey was followed by points from Henry Walsh and Brian Merriman. Then the key moments of the game followed as the Mountbellew full forward rattled the crossbar with a pile driver which then bounced to safety. The CBS worked the ball up field and a high ball from Jonathan Mooney was finished to the net by Brian Merriman. This was the crucial score which gave the CBS confidence to finish off the game.

In the final five minutes the CBS were rampant and two further goals from Henry Walshe and KJ Farrell gave a great look to the score line. Henry Walsh finished off the game with a wonderful score from the right sideline as the CBS eased to victory at the close.

Overall this was a very good team performance from the CBS lads. Shane O’Malley, Patrick Clinton and Colin Gannon provided great stability and drive in defence. Casey and Egan provided a great platform around the middle, which allowed Walshe, Merriman and Earley to highlight their accuracy.
