GAA Club Preview – your club this weekend



Well done to Tony Conboy on his initiative in hosting a very enjoyable quiz on Friday night last in the Moylurg Inn as a fundraiser to assist the GAA community in Brisbane whose club facilities were destroyed in recent flooding. Anyone who missed the quiz may, if they wish, make a donation to Tony for this worthy cause. Plans are at an advanced stage for the holding of the club’s monster draw on Saturday night next 19th March in the Clubroom at 9 pm. All who have been allocated tickets are asked to make one final push to  complete their sales and to return the counterfoils and the proceeds to the Clubroom where their will be a special ‘ticket sales’ meeting on Friday night at 8 pm. Saturday night’s function will also include the presentation of the North Division 4 winners medals for 2010 to the successful panel of players, as well as the presentation of the Hall of Fame, Club Person of the Year, and Player of the Year at Intermediate, Junior and Under 21 for 2010. The Cooney Motors/Centra team lost to Kilglass Gaels in the league in the Abbey Park on Sunday last. They will host Western Gaels in the Abbey Park in their next outing on Sunday next at 2 pm. The minor team’s scheduled game with St Brigids didn’t go ahead on Sunday last and it has been re-scheduled for Kiltoom on this Friday night under lights. The U16s will play Padraig Pearses on Sunday next at 12 noon in the Abbey Park. 

Boyle Ladies Club; Boyle U16 girls secured their third consecutive victory on Sunday last when they survived a strong challenge from Michael Glaveys on a scoreline of 6-7 to 5-6. They will entertain St Dominics on Sunday next at 3.30 pm in the Abbey Park. Boyle junior ladies will have their first outing of the season on Sunday next when they will take on Ballinameen in Ballinameen. The U12s will train on Monday and Friday evenings from 6 pm to 7 pm. 


Castlerea St Kevin’s dinner dance takes place in the Stagger Inn on Saturday 19th March at 8 pm. The intermediate ladies county champions will be presented with their medals on the night and music will be supplied by Lightning Strikes. Tickets are €25 each and can be purchased by contacting 086-1721465, 087-9001072, 086-0617670, 087-9074816 or any club member. The Ladies senior team play Padraig Pearses in the league next weekend in O’Rourke Park. See local press for details. 


On Sunday next there will be registration for all underage boys and girls in Johnstown between 11.15 am and 1 pm. The club would like to congratulate Cathal Duignan and Cathal Shine who featured for Roscommon U21s in their victory over Mayo on Saturday. 


Roscommon GAA race day takes place in Punchestown on Saturday the 7th of May. Tickets (€100) can be purchased from club Chairman Anthony Cahill. The club wishes James Finan a speedy recovery. Secondary School students are reminded that Roscommon County Board is offering a number of grants to students who wish to improve their knowledge of Irish by enabling them to attend a Gaeltacht. If interested, further details may be obtained on the County Board website at Lotto rota – Loughglynn: Pat Doorey, Gortaganny: John Doorey. The club extend sympathy to the Freeman family, Creevy, Lisacul.


Fuerty will play their first competitive game of the year when the O’Gara Cup starts this coming Saturday with St Croans the opposition. Fans are asked to come out in big numbers as the team will need all the support available as they make the step up to Division 2 football. Throw-in is at 4 pm in Mulhern Park. Looking forward to seeing you there.


Kilbride are scheduled to play Strokestown in Kilbride in the third round of the Tansey Cup this coming Saturday at 6.30. 

Kilbride GAA Club is holding its final registration night on 23rd March in the Clubhouse from 7.30 to 9 pm. The latest date for registration of membership is the 31st March. All players must be club members in order to be covered for insurance purpose

Ladies football – Senior Ladies: Kilbride Senior Ladies will play Kilglass Gaels on Friday evening in the first round of the Senior League at 8 pm in Kilbride.  We wish the players and management the best of luck in their opening game. 


The club would like to firstly send its sincere sympathy to the family and friends of the late John Joe Cox who passed away last week. John Joe, who was one of the characters of our parish, is of course father to our caretaker and groundsman Jackie and also our main ladies club sponsor Micheal James Cox. Also last week saw the passing of another great Gael, Eileen Hanley. Eileen held many different roles in the club and was also the driving force behind the parish of Kilglass book in which she took great pride. Kilglass Gaels would like to send our sincere sympathy to all her family and friends. On the field the intermediate team had a great win away to Boyle. The team now play Creggs this Sunday in what will more than likely be a double-header with the junior team. Check fixtures. Well done and congratulations to team members Tommy Cox and Diarmuid Connellan who were part of the team that beat Mayo in the Connacht U21 Championship last Saturday. We wish both team and management the best of luck against Leitrim this Saturday. 


Don’t forget the Roscommon Gaels Social which will take place in The Dr. Hyde Centre on this Saturday 19th March. Music by Gerry Cassidy. There will be a hot meal, commencing at 9.30 pm. Tickets are €25. Presentation of county medals will be made to our terrific minor team at the function.

Our minor team defeated St Dominics in the minor league played at Knockcroghery last Sunday and our U16 team defeated Castlerea in the 1st round of the U16 league played under lights at Lisnamult last Thursday. 

Camogie: The U14 team play Tulsk this weekend.

Membership fees are now due and should be paid before any training session or game is played. Players must be paid up members of our club and registered before they are covered by insurance. 

Sincere sympathy to the Gannon family on the sudden death of Stephen Gannon and to the Finn family, Creevy on the death of Gerry’s mother.


The Annual Club Social night will be held on Saturday 19th March in Keenan’s. Music on the night by Erin’s Pride. Special guests on the night will be one of Cork’s top players Michael Shields and ‘Sam Maguire’ and The Nestor Cup. Medals will be presented to the Junior Ladies team who reached the County Final of the Championship last year. All are welcome. 

U-16: Parents will be informed by text with training details for the coming week. Next game fixed for Sunday 20th March at home to Clann na nGael B

Minor: Parents will be notified by text with details for training. 

Underage Presentation will take place on Saturday 19th March in the Clubhouse at 6 pm. Medals will be presented to various teams. Special guests on the evening will be one of Cork’s top players, Michael Shields and the Sam Maguire Cup. Michael has family connections in the area as Michael’s mother originally hails from Scramogue. All are welcome. 

Club members are reminded to complete Garda Vetting forms. Forms are available from Gerry Farrell, Seamus Bennett or Lorraine O’Connor.


St Brigid’s GAA Club would like to thank everyone who supported our very successful Table Quiz on Friday last, and also the large number of volunteers that have helped out over the past week at the various events that have taken place in the clubhouse.

As we will be otherwise occupied on Paddy’s Day why not come along and join us on Saturday night to celebrate our national holiday with music by Underdogs.

Draw takes place next Sunday night 20th March 2011 in St. Brigid’s Sports & Social Centre at 11 pm. 


The U16 team are due to begin their Division 1 league campaign on Sunday next versus Clann na nGael in Enfield. U14 training will be on Sunday 20th at 7 pm, rather than Thursday, due to St. Patrick’s Day. Any U12 who would like to be part of the U14 team is welcome to come along.

St. Faithleachs GAA Club ‘ROSE’: Our St. Faithleachs GAA Club Rose Night takes place on Saturday 2nd April. With the success of last year, we hope to have 12 more ladies to take part this year. Ladies interested in entering, please contact Bernie Cotter or Mary Kenny. Tickets now on sale €10. 

The club extends deepest sympathy to Donal O’Grady & family, Ballyleague on the death of Donal’s step-mother, Bridget O’Grady, Tubber, Co. Clare.


Tansey Cup League: St. Joseph’s had a home game v Shannon Gaels on Sunday afternoon last. In an evenly-matched game, both teams worked very hard and played well, despite poor weather conditions. However both teams suffered injuries, firstly a Shannon Gaels player and then our own Peter ‘Tiny’ Gillooly. We wish both players a very speedy recovery, and hope they will be back playing with their teams very soon. Our next outing in the Tansey Cup league is this Saturday at 4.30 pm in Kilteevan pitch where we will play Castlerea. Supporters are encouraged to come along and cheer on the team.

Training continues on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 8 pm. It is important that players attend both training sessions. Congratulations to Brian Carroll and Peter Gillooly who have been selected as Captain and Vice-Captain respectively for the coming season. We wish both players well and will give them our full support in their the new roles.

Good luck to the Roscommon U21 team in the Connacht semi-final against Leitrim in Carrick-on-Shannon on Saturday next at 2.30.

The club extends its condolences to the Lynch family on their recent bereavement.


The junior team plays Elphin in the Division 4 league in Ballyfarnon on Sunday next at 2.30 pm. Well done to the Roscommon U21 team on their victory over Mayo in the Connacht U21 championship game played in Castlebar on Saturday last. They now play Leitrim in the Connacht semi-final in Carrick-on-Shannon this Saturday at 2.30 pm. Our club player, Alan Benson, is a member of the Roscommon panel. 


The Junior A team look to continue to winning ways on Saturday evening against Clann na nGael. That game is in Johnstown at 4.30 pm. The U16s are at home to Tulsk this weekend. Check fixtures for details. There will be a Junior B game, so check fixtures also. 

The Junior Ladies will play St. Mary’s in Tulsk on Sunday at 2 pm. Congrats to all the underage players who received their medals on Saturday night. Thanks to the Bush Hotel for their generosity on the night and to all who organised and supported the night. The club would also like to thank Padraig McWeeney who won a set of jerseys and donated them to the club. 


Presentation of medals to last year’s victorious Intermediate and ladies Junior team will take in the Percy French this Saturday night at 9 pm. Music on the night. The junior team were defeated by Clann na nGael in Johnstown on Saturday. Thanks to the Clan na nGael club for the refreshments afterwards.


Tulsk Minor team played St Barrys on Sunday 13th. After a very competitive first half Tulsk pulled away in the second and ran out convincing winners. The U16’s play Shannon Gaels in Croghan on Sunday next. Please see fixtures for time. St Marys U16 team had their game cancelled this weekend due to bad weather. This game will probably be scheduled for next weekend. Training continues in Lisalway for minor and junior players.


The Annual Club Dinner Dance is in the Bush Hotel next Friday (18th). Special guest on the night is Gay Sheerin. Presentations to last year’s winning ladies and gents teams on the night. Limited number of tickets available at €40. The Division 3 team lost to Kilbride over the weekend on a scoreline of 2-9 to 1-8. The next match is against Boyle in Boyle next Sunday at 2 pm. The next Division 4 league match is on Sunday against Kilbride. Check fixtures. The minors had a good win over St. Aidans in the second round of the league and the U16 team play St. Ciarans in the league next Sunday in Frenchpark.

Ladies: The junior ladies play Clan na nGael in the first round of the league next Sunday in Frenchpark. Check fixtures for all match times. It important that all players are registered before representing the club. Members who have not done this are to contact James asap.



Senior training continues every Friday evening at 8 pm. All players are asked to attend. Club membership is still outstanding for 2011. Please contact treasurer Adrian Daly or assistant treasurer Frank Carr. 



U14 & U16 training continues on Tuesday nights at 7 pm in Tisrara Community Sports Park. The U16 team are playing Oran next Sunday at 2 pm in Oran. U12 training will continue on Friday evening in Tisrara Community Sports Park at 7 pm sharp. All girls are asked to attend as games will be commencing in the next month. Girls wishing to register with the club can contact any of the committee members.


GAA Skills: Coaching for Girls age 8-12 years at 5 pm on Friday in the old pitch. Tickets are now on sale for our Easter Raffle and are €2 a line. Please support. Presentation of our Division 2 league and Junior A Championship medals are been presented at a club dance in the Percy French Hotel on Saturday night the 19th of March.
