Roscommon clinch intermediate doubles final

The big game of the weekend from a Roscommon perspective was the Connacht intermediate doubles final. This match pitched the experienced Roscommon pair of Niall McGrath and Chris Doolin against the younger but talented Mayo duo of Stephen Cooney and Ian McLoughlin.

The first game went as expected with Ros winning 21-8 with left hander Niall McGrath in particular playing havoc with his blend of power and precision. It was a different story however in the second with the Mayo lads concentrating on Chris Doolin who was definitely feeling the effects of the ridiculous fixture congestion which had him playing two senior matches the day before. Mayo won this game 21-14.

The third game proved to be a nail-biter with Ros going into a 10-2 lead, but inevitably being pegged back with the teams eventually drawing level at 15 each. McGrath really stepped forward at this stage and took the responsibility of winning the game which Roscommon finally did 21-17 after a number of excellent rallies. If Ros are to progress any further in a very strong grade they will have to play far more consistent handball and Chris will have to look at his general positioning in the court during rallies.

Connacht Juvenile A Finals: After a very successful semi-final weekend the finals were a different story for Roscommon with only one winner, Cathal Connelly in the U17 boys singles. There were two walkovers in Roscommon’s favour in the Boys U16 Doubles (Conor Egan / Colm Walshe) and Girls U14 Doubles (Caoimhe Shanagher / Fiona Tully). All three will feature in the All-Ireland semi-finals this coming weekend and have the ability to do very well. The game of the weekend was the meeting of two world champions in the Girls U16 singles. Lauren O’Riordan (Ros) and Ciana Ni Churraoin (Galway) served up an absolute thriller with the Galway girl winning this latest episode of their ongoing rivalry 21-20, 21-13.
