GAA Club Preview – Your Club this Weekend



There will be an important meeting in the Clubroom on Friday next 4th March to review sales of tickets for the forthcoming draw for weekend away in New York for the upcoming Roscommon v New York Connacht Championship game. The 2011 playing season commenced at the weekend with mixed results for our two teams that were in action. The minors had a convincing win over Clan na nGael in the Division 1 league in the Abbey Park on Sunday. The Cooney Motors/Cooney’s Centra team lost to a stronger Michael Glaveys outfit in Ballinlough on Saturday. The McGovern Directional Drilling team will entertain Strokestown in the first round of the O’Rourke Cup competition on Sunday next in the Abbey Park. The club will be participating in the Scór County Finals in Ballinaheglish on Saturday night next. Secondary school students from the club area are reminded that the Roscommon County Board are offering a number of grants to students who wish to improve their knowledge of Irish by enabling them to attend a Gaeltacht. Those who are interested are advised that further details may be obtained on the County Board website at The club extends its sympathy to the Flanagan family, Rockingham on the death of Pat.


The executive committee of Castlerea St Kevin’s are compiling a comprehensive history of the GAA in the parish of Kilkeevan since its foundation in 1888. The editor of the history is former Tarmon native Colm Hannelly. To help defray the cost of publishing the history we invite anyone who has links with Castlerea St Kevin’s to become a patron, and if you wish to do so contact any of the following:  Eamon Campion, Danny Burke, Johnny Mahony, Brian Stenson or club secretary Marie McDermott. We hope to launch the history on Easter Sunday night in the O’Rourke Centre and all patrons will be invited and will receive a copy of the book. Castlerea St Kevin’s dinner dance takes place in the Stagger Inn on Saturday 19th March at 8 pm. The intermediate ladies county champions will be presented with their medals on the night and music will be supplied by Tequila Sunrise. Tickets are €25 each and can be purchased from club members. The junior team were defeated by Creggs in the first round of the Tansey Cup last Sunday in Castlerea. The senior team play Kilmore in the O’Rourke Cup first round next weekend in Castlerea. We extend our sympathy to our club patron Billy Webb and his brother John on the death of their sister Mary Burke in New Ross and also to the Heavey family, Knockroe on the death of Joe Heavey.


The Clann na nGael junior A team opened their Tansey Cup campaign with a draw with Western Gaels in Johnstown on Saturday evening last.

Minor league: Clann na nGael 0-13 Boyle 3-13. Clann Ladies u16 played their second round championship match in Johnstown
on Sunday against champions Strokestown. Clann drew level but as the game went into the last 10 minutes Strokestown got a few late scores to close out the game and win by four. 


The Intermediate team welcome St Aidans to Loughglynn for the first league game of the year next Sunday. The club wishes the team and management best of luck for the year ahead. The Ladies Club held their AGM on Thursday last. Our next meeting is on Thursday March 24th at 8 pm in the Clubhouse. New members are always welcome and we would appreciate support of any new volunteers willing to help out with training or just attend meetings. The club are also hoping to set up a Gaelic 4 Mothers team. Anyone who may be interested in this new club venture is asked to contact Vanessa Anderson on 086-8354914. Gaelic 4 Mothers offers mothers (or anyone over 18) an opportunity to play the game in a fun, non-competitive and social environment. We guarantee you that this will be a great way to meet new people, have some fun, enjoy yourself and exercise, all at the same time. The U16 girls got their championship campaign off to a good start. We wish the girls and their managers, Rebecca Madden & Lisa O’Donnell, the best of luck for the coming year. The U12 competition will be starting up again soon and the trainers will be in contact with the players shortly regarding training. cpr/defibrillator training: A class for new members will take place in the Community Centre, Loughglynn on Saturday morning, 5th March. Kilbride get their O’Rourke Cup campaign off to a start against Elphin next Saturday evening at 2 pm in Kilbride pitch. Training continues for all players during the week. Kilbride GAA Club is holding three registration nights on the 2nd, 9th and 23rd March in the Clubhouse from 7.30 to 9 pm each night to collect club membership. The latest date for registration of membership is the 31st March. 


Anyone that has photos of teams or club activities from on or off the field please send them on to or ‘phone Niall on 087-7640673 before 4th March. We are collecting bags of unwanted clothes, bags and shoes and we would appreciate all donations. Bags can be dropped to the centre at any time. Any players not yet registered must do so immediately as no player can take part in training or games unless registered and must have membership paid for insurance purposes. No registration means no involvement in any club activities after this date. Membership for 2011 is due. 


Best of luck to Dermot Sheridan who takes over the juniors for the coming year.  All players are reminded to pay the club registration for the coming year. The Kalzen sponsored senior team get their season underway this Sunday 6th March where they will face Castlerea St Kevins in the opening league game of the year in Castlerea. The club would like to congratulate St Brigids on their fantastic achievement in reaching the All-Ireland Club final.


The Pearses Club wishes to commend St Brigids on their great win over Nemo Rangers last weekend and we wish them the very best of success on St. Patrick’s Day in the All-Ireland Club Final.

Minor Football: The Pearses minor training continues on Mondays and Thursdays at 8 pm. The Under 14 hurlers had a great win over Athleague/Tremane on Sunday last in Woodmount. In fairness Athleague were playing there second game of the weekend. 


U16 boys play 1st round of the league on Sunday. See fixtures for further details.

Congratulations to the Convent of Mercy Senior camogie team on reaching the All-Ireland Schools Final. Our U14 girls face Four Roads away this weekend in the first round of the Championship. Training continues each Tuesday. New players always welcome. Best of luck to the County U16 team who face Cavan at the weekend and in particular to the girls from the club.

Membership fees are now due and should be paid before any training session or game is played. 

Congratulations to St Brigids who once again proved the pundits wrong, where Roscommon teams are concerned. Best of luck in the preparations for the All-Ireland Final. Roscommon Gaels are hosting a Fun Table Quiz on Friday 11th March, in Regans at 9 pm. Table of four €20. Please support. All welcome. 


Under 12 football training starts this Sunday 6th March in Ballyforan at 12 noon.  Looking forward to seeing all players there with everyone very welcome. Bingo as usual every Saturday night in the Hook & Tackle, Ballyforan at 8.30 pm. 


Our first game in the O’Gara Cup is this weekend against Ballinameen. Check fixtures for details. The next club meeting will take place Saturday 5th March at  8.30 pm in the clubhouse.

St.Barrys minors training arrangements will be sent to parents by text for the coming week. U 16 training continues every Thursday evening at 7.45. The first league game will be played Sunday 6th March. Check fixtures for details.

Our junior ladies had a great win over Shannon Gaels, 5-12 to 2-2. The next game will be 10th April. Training continues every Wednesday at 7.30.

Our underage presentation will take place Saturday 19th March in the clubhouse. Special guests will attend on the night to present medals.

St Barry’s U-16’s (male) play Kilbride on Sunday next 6th at 12 noon in Kilbride.  


St Brigid’s 0-13 Nemo Rangers 1-8: After a pulsating incident-packed game in Limerick we deservedly head to Croke Park for a crack at the other Rangers from Crossmaglen on St. Patrick’s Day. Saturday will live forever in the memory of all who witnessed the brilliant performance we put in to defeat the hot favourites from Cork. See match report. Please play your part and show the lads that we are all behind them, get those flags, bunting and signs out. To be preparing for an All-Ireland final is a wonderful feeling and the team and management deserve our support. So please put in the effort to put those flags out.

The first outing of the year for the golf society will be on Saturday 5th March in a scramble competition at 10 am at Athlone Golf Club. New members very welcome – contact Murty on 086-8843800 or Frankie on 087-3453845,

As part of the build-up to our historic All-Ireland appearance we have set up a training fund to cover the expenses incurred and as part of this we are holding a table Quiz on Friday 11th March in the Clubhouse. So please come along and show your support for the team. More details next week. 


St Ciarans Ladies are holding a fundraising ‘Bachelor Competition’ on Friday 11th March at Hamrocks, Athleague. Eligible bachelors are currently polishing up their acts for what will be a fun, light-hearted occasion. Small number of vacancies still exist for any aspiring Bachelors out there! Tickets are currently on sale at only €5. Please support. Season is now getting into full swing with u-16’s and Juniors in action. Junior team played Elphin on Sunday at Mulhern Park in their first game of the season and recorded a four-point victory. Hard luck to our club members who represented Convent of Mercy, Roscommon in the recent Senior All-Ireland schools camogie final in Newcastle against Kilmacthomas of Waterford. Mercy unluckily lost by a single goal in a thrilling final. 


The club are organising a day trip to Croke Park for past players, members and friends on the 7th of March, leaving Ballintubber at 8 am. The trip involves a tour of the stadium and museum, with lunch served at 1 pm. If you are interested please contact Jimmy Egan on 086-3142300 or Michael Holland on 086-2549815. An important meeting for parents of players intending to play U8 football this year will take place in the Old School House, Ballintubber on Thursday evening at 9 pm. 

U.14 training will commence on this Thursday evening at 7 pm in Enfield. 

The club’s recycling fundraiser is underway. St. Croans are collecting steel, copper, aluminium, lead, old cars/tractors/machinery and batteries of all types. Registration for underage members will take place on this Sunday 6th March at 5 pm in the Meeting Room. Registration for all adult members will be collected on the next two Friday evenings at 7.30 pm in the Meeting room.

The club offers its sympathy to the Duffy family, Culleen on the death of Martin last week. Martin was a past Chairman of our Football Club and the club formed a Guard of Honour at his funeral on Saturday. 


Our St. Faithleachs GAA Club Rose Night takes place on Saturday 2nd April. With the success of last year, we hope to have 12 more ladies to take part this year. St. Patrick’s Day Parade – St. Faithleachs GAA Float with Kids Disco in the Clubhouse following the Parade. Night at the Dogs, 15th April followed by music in the Clubhouse with Colm Mulligan. The Ladies Gaelic Football Association are running Gaelic4Girls in the Lanesborough/Ballyleague area (St Faithleachs GAA pitch) every Saturday from 4-5 pm for eight weeks, beginning on the 5th March. The programme involves girls between 9-13 years. The cost is only €8. The club extends deepest sympathy to the Carroll family, Ballinaboy on the sudden and untimely death of Patricia Carroll. R.I.P. Both Patricia’s son Brian and son-in-law Aidan are players with St. Joseph’s and we send our prayers and thoughts to them, and to Linda and Peter at this very difficult time. Training continues on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 8 pm. Players will be notified if we have a match in the Tansey Cup league at the weekend.

This weekend the junior team is due to play St. Barry’s in Tarmonbarry on Saturday. On Sunday next the intermediate team starts the new season with a home fixture in the O’Gara Cup against Oran in Ballyfarnon at 2.30 pm.

The winner of the National League forecast (Week 3) was Michael Gaffney, Keadue with a score of 19 points. Tickets for the next round are available from club members. Congratulations to St. Brigids on the outstanding performance against Nemo Rangers on Saturday last in the All-Ireland Club semi-final and we wish them the best of luck in the All-Ireland final on St. Patrick’s Day. 


Congratulations to St. Brigids on a fantastic victory over Nemo Rangers in the All-Ireland club semi-final. They did the county proud.

The 25 card drive was another success in Glancys on Friday night. Thanks to all who contributed to the event. Top prize-winner was Chris O’Dowd, with runners-up prizes going to Michael Keeneghan, John Joe McGuinness, Hughie Bredin and Daniel Marron.

Thanks to the FAS group under the guidance of Tony O’Donnell which has done immense work around the pitch in Croghan, and continue to do so. They are also starting on the community centre in Cortober for us.


Tulsk Juniors will play Western Gaels in Frenchpark next Sunday – see fixtures for time of game. Tulsk Intermediate team will start their league campaign with a home fixture against St Michaels next Saturday evening. See fixtures for time of game. Thanks go to all those who helped with the fundraising scrap metal collection over the weekend. Tulsk minor team gave a very good performance in a winning start to their league campaign v Kilmore on Sunday in Tulsk. Final score: Tulsk 5-13 to Kilmore 3-5. We are holding a club registration evening on Friday 4th March from 8 pm-10 pm in the clubhouse for adults and underage. All players wishing to represent the club in 2011 must be registered.

The club will be holding its Annual Dinner Dance in the Bush Hotel in Carrick-on-Shannon on Friday 18th March. Tickets are on sale now at €40 each. The minor team commenced the minor league with a loss to St. Michaels in Frenchpark on Sunday and the Under 16s begin their league campaign next Sunday. Check fixtures for further details. The ladies Under 16 team play Roscommon Gaels next Sunday in Frenchpark.



Oran U14 match v Tulsk will take place in Rockfield at 4 pm on Saturday. Affiliation/membership is now due. Hard luck to Convent of Mercy Senior Camogie team who narrowly defeated in the All-Ireland final on Saturday. Oran had big representation on the panel, namely Ann-Marie Lambert, Deirdre Regan, Shauna Keenan, Ciara Owens, Ciara Ryan, Marie Carty, Aine McCormack, Aisling Connaughton, Bronagh Lowry and Caroline Gunning. Great credit is due to all the players and the management on reaching the final and they should be very proud of their achievements this year.



All U-21 players are requested to attend training with the Junior A team next weekend. Time and venue will be decided upon during the week and players will be notified by text or see facebook.  



The U-16 team will be playing Padraig Pearses in Tisrara Community Sports Park on Sunday March 6th at 3.30. Please support. U-12 training is commencing on Friday March 4th in Tisrara Community Sports Park at 7 pm. All girls are asked to attend as games will be commencing in the next month. Girls wishing to register with the club can contact any of the committee members. The club would like to congratulate the Convent of Mercy camogie team on reaching the All-Ireland final last weekend.


We had a most enjoyable presentation night last Friday. The minor and junior girls were presented with their medals and the Chairperson, Brendan O’Connor, congratulated the teams and asked for a continued commitment from all the girls playing for St. Marys.
