Castlerea triumph

U-16 A Boys Western Schools League Play-Off: Castlerea C.S. 53 Calasantius, Oranmore 48

There has been little between these two sides in the last two years and this game followed the same pattern, as that over-used phrased ‘down to the wire’ was never more appropriate.

Castlerea has been defeated by Oranmore in their away game before Christmas by two points so they had to win this one by three points to go through to the All-Ireland play-offs.

It was competitive throughout and at half-time there was little to choose between the team with Castlerea holding a slender four-point advantage, 23-19. They outscored their opponents 17-16 in the third quarter and managed to hold on in a nail-biting final quarter to run out deserved five-point winners at the buzzer.

They now go on the play-offs which take place in Bray on the 6th February. Panel: Patrick Gunning, Aaron Keane, Cormac Guthrie, Dillon Carlos, Ian Crango, Francis McIlroy, Kevin Igoe, Cathal Neary, Tomas Callaghan, Keith Keenan, Joseph Henry and Diarmuid Lannon.
