The Roscommon pool team won the Connacht pool title in Dunmore, Co. Galway at the weekend. It was a fantastic result for the Roscommon men who used all their experience and skill to bring the title to Roscommon for the first time and a great start to the year for Roscommon on the sports front.
The matches comprised of three sets of doubles and six singles and the team was made up of captain Patrick Higgins (Railway Bar) and Enda O’Shea (Lifebelt Bar), Patrick Carberry (Lifebelt Bar) and Noel Moran (Lifebelt Bar), Michael Higgins (Sissy McGintys) and Liam Finneran (Railway Bar) and each of these players played a singles match as well.
Roscommon started off with a 5-0 win over a Galway team in round 1. In round 2 they continued with another excellent 5-0 win, this time over a Tuam team. In the quarter-final they beat a Dunmore team 5-1 and in the semi-final they beat a much-fancied team from Galway City 5-2 with some excellent potting.
In the final they beat a talented team from Tuam 5-2 with some excellent pool in front of a Galway crowd. The trophies and a cheque for €1500 was presented to Patrick Higgins by sports commentator Ollie Turner of Galway Bay FM.
