Cllr. Liam Callaghan has welcomed the news that 1.9 m in funding is ring-fenced to improve water quality in the Castlerea regional water scheme.
The scheme currently covers Castlerea, Tarmon, Kilmurray, Castleplunkett and Ballintubber area. Cllr. Callaghan said that the current scheme is continuously under a boil water notice but hopes that the current funding will put an end to this problem.
It is hoped a new spring and filtering system will be put in place and some of the old supplies will be discontinued. Speaking at the annual budget meeting of Roscommon County Council, Cllr. Callaghan highlighted the problems of the current supply in the Castlerea area and said that with the high cost of water, consumers deserve the best supply available. He also said that householders should consider water harvesting as a cheap alternative for washing, cleaning and farming. It is hoped these works will start shortly.
