Athlone Community College had a strong squad of swimmers in action at the Connacht school championships held in Galway over the weekend taking a large haul of medals – 11 in all – back to the school. The day turned out to be hugely successful for the ACC swim team. After their excellent individual and team performances all the swimmers qualified for the All Ireland schools.
The girls in the Senior IM Relay team (Sionann O’Reilly Collins, Chloe Joyce, Katie Jameson and Michelle Gibbons) had a brilliant swim with Michelle and Katie putting in determined swims to hold on to silver for the team. In the freestyle relay even though they put in a spirited performance they were edged out of the medals to fourth place. The boys relay team of Darragh Joyce, Cian Warby, John Conlon and Ruairi Berryman took silver in both the IM and the freestyle relay.
Sionann had a brilliant race in the 400m freestyle where she made it look effortless and was rewarded with a Gold medal; a Bronze in the 100m Back and final in the Butterfly.
Chloe Joyce had an excellent swim to take Gold in the 100m Breaststroke powering ahead and leaving the competition way behind and a Bronze in the Butterfly. Darragh Joyce had strong swims to keep the flag flying for the Joyce family taking a well deserved Gold in the 400m freestyle and silver in the Butterfly and the Breaststroke.
Cian Warby also put in a great swim to take silver in the backstroke final. Ruairi Berryman, Katie Jameson, John Conlon, Michelle Gibbons all had excellent individual performances with each of them coming out with several PBs.
For Sionann, Chloe and Darragh this came on the back of six days in the University of Limerick gaining great experience on the Swim Ireland High Performance program. During the six-day programme they swam in excess of 60 km returned home on Saturday afternoon, travelled to Galway on the Sunday meeting up with their school team mates.
