Roscommon County Council will cut the rates they charge to commercial businesses by 1% for 2011. That was one of the many measures agreed at the 2011 budget meeting which was held before Christmas. The County Manager Frank Dawson outlined the very tough conditions in which the budget was framed in the wake of an 8% cut in funding from central government for 2011. He told the meeting that the council were actually budgeting for a 12% cut.
Before the meeting began the mayor Cllr. Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan announced that he was going to give up 50% of his mayoral allowance of €26,400 (see page 34).
County Manager Mr Frank Dawson then explained the budget context for 2011. He said that framing the budget for 2010 was extremely difficult but that framing the budget for 2011 was much tougher.
He said that the grant from central government was down by 8% or about 4 million. He was proposing a cut in rates of 1%. This was subsequently agreed.
