Huge attendance at Pool League AGM

The AGM of the Roscommon Pool league took place on Tuesday 21st September in Foxe’s Pub, Roscommon town, with the biggest attendance ever. On the night Barry Miley was re-elected chairman and Noel Moran re-elected Secretary/PRO. Coiln Hanly was appointed Treasurer taking over from Gordon Murray.

Four new teams entered the competition on the night, Rattigan’s of Kilrooskey, Tower B from Elphin, The Kon Tiki of Rooskey and Larry’s Bar of Roscommon Town. The Central of Elphin re-entered the league after a one-year absence, thus 24 teams entered the league, the biggest number ever.

It was decided to put up the entrance fee to €400, leaving €9,600 in prize money this year. Guinness has kindly agreed to sponsor the league again this year. The format for the competition was decided, 12 teams in group A and 12 teams in group B, however this year the winner of each group goes into the semi final, with second placed in the group going into the quarter final and 3rd and 4th in the group going into a playoff. The teams in the opposite group to decide who gets into the quarter final. The same format takes place for both the cup and the shield. Therefore teams placed one to four in each group go into the Cup and teams five to eight in each group go into the Shield.

The winners of the cup get 40 percent of €8,600, the runners up get 30 percent of €8,600, 3rd and 4th get €500 each. The winners of the shield get 20 percent of €8,600 and the runners up of the shield get ten percent of €8600 Euro.

The league will be played every Friday night, right through the Christmas and the group stages are scheduled to finish on 25th February. The rules remained the same after some discussion, however it was decided that each team had to name 15 players before the league commenced and they could not change that 15 players after that and each team would receive a list of the names of the players of the teams in their group.
