Roscommon Senior Camogie Final
Four Roads 1-9 Athleague 1-7
A storming second-half display saw defending champions Four Roads win their third county senior Camogie title in a row but not before a massive challenge was thrown down by an Athleague side who were unlucky in the end not to have got at least a share of the spoils from this exciting game played in Athleague last Saturday.
Athleague were the better side in the first half and at half-time it looked like there would be a shock on the cards when the home side went in leading by 1-5 to 0-4, but Four Roads battled away well in the second period and they just about deserved to win the match.
Kelly Hopkins was prominent and scored five super points in the first half as the challengers were the dominant side, and Rachel Fallon’s goal from close range after 13 minutes’ play helped then to a four-point lead at the break.
Cait Kenny was also in top form from the placed ball for Four Roads and on the resumption Sinead O’Brien pointed before captain Donna Kelly scored a crucial goal for the champions.
All Athleague had to show for their second-half efforts were two Kelly Hopkins frees while Four Roads got the bit between their teeth. Cait Kenny was deadly accurate from frees and 45’s and it was two late frees from her that saw Four Roads win the title for the third year on the trot.
Best for Four Roads were Cait Kenny, Siobhan Coyle, Marie Glennon Kelly and Donna Kelly while for Athleague, Kelly Hopkins was outstanding while Elaine Daly, Ciara Moran and Rachel Fallon also impressed.
